It didn't

Well first of all, metal purist never liked it.
Although retrospectively some of the bands weren't that bad (deftones, incubus), but some of the bands were god fucking awful, like the pic you posted.
I think the post above is right in a way, nu metal would probably have done better in todays environment.
But metal has moved past it. The current metal phase is faggy hipster metal like deafhevan and liturgy, or thrash revival like vektor, or just like bands doing their own thing like wolves in the throne room and fleshgod Apocalypse.
Second, people just got bored of it i guess. The early 2000's was the twilight years of nu metal and pop punk, they got supersede by Emo when jimmy eat world dropped the middle.

Like could you picture if a band like the deftones came out today, a bunch of mexicans that mix rap, metal, and hipster expermental shit. And its good.

For metalcore to rise. This trend is well documented in edgy music soundtracks. Resident evil going to resident evil 2 soundtrack is what you're looking for. Also you can track the rise of my metal this way too. Mission impossible soundtracks are good examples.

it was a scene that looks incredibly dated now. several years ago I don't think I could have said that but now with the distance afforded by time you can look at nu metal and drop the pin right on 2000, 2001.

a few of those acts survived, deftones like someone else said is one good example. I don't know why because you look at them and they still kind of ooze that aesthetic but I guess they just kept it fresh and interesting enough to break from the bubble while their peers drowned in it. the influences they draw into their music are pretty tasteful and varied too if you look into them.
