The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to finally get taste holy shit.

Casimodo Tango and Mourir un Peu are so freaking beautiful, just like the rest of the album is (in its own and very peculiar way) the idea of backing drones and a voice might seem simple but once you hear the delivery of the latter it changes everything. Completely outstanding

>Don Cherry - Orient
Easily the best of Cherry's work. He takes what's good about Mu and Eternal Rhythm and blends them together in this live performance. Throw in some tablas, throat singing, African chants, singing, and other fun things, and you get one of the most spiritual experiences you can find in a jazz album. The part where he encourages the crowd to sing with him is beautiful.
4-
>Bucket Full of Teeth - I, II, III
Really interesting mix of genres on this one that surprisingly works really well. Between all of the short, relentless bursts of songs is usually a very nice ambient track to calm everything down before the madness begins again. The tracks, although short, all have lots of variety. I can see this growing on me hard very soon.

>N.O.D. - Niggaz of Destruction
This thing is damn terrifying. It's basically a bunch of dudes rapping about demons and murdering people over beats that sound like demented SNES songs. So basically, it's incredible.

>thots on admonishing the bishops? tful is one of the best bands. also whats the one with the eyes on the white background?

They are. TFUL proves once again that they harbor impressive versatility in their music. This is evident with the warped post-punk dirge that was found in MOAS, the "brown" avant-prog inspired Lovleyville, and the Branca-esque math rock pathos of SFTU. ATB seems to be an extension of the aforementioned sound of Strangers. There is a notable difference however. Here, the band's label of "indie rock" begins to show. This is not a bad thing at all, as indie rock works tend to have more of a focus on it's tonality, rather than on it's intricacy. This apparent on Bishops, and the vibe here is very well wrought.

It's not an 8 or anything. I still think that the fellers nailed their tonal stride with the endlessly brooding Saints, but they still pull it off well on this EP.

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/single/icu_f1/blind_leading_the_blind__citizens____inhibitions/

(it's not that good)

Please forgive me if this seems all over the place; there is a rather suggestive image of a Wakfu character on the banner and it's distracting me.

>how was leviathan?

It was great. The best part about this film was it's tone (here I go again with the tone), and how the final story beat effortlessly summarized and validated the thematic elements that was building up throughout the film. There was one major event in this film that stuck me as inorganic (it's a spoiler), so there were some points taken off for that.

But seriously, shit like that makes me glad that I subscribed to YMS. I came for the gay furry memes and shit-talk of bad movie franchises, stayed for the good film taste.

Kinda rusty with these shorter reviews, so I apologize in advance.

Lil Ugly Mane - Oblivion Access

Something about LUM’s approach has really just stuck with me recently and I’m not sure why. He’s able to blend a shocking amount of styles with hip-hop successfully - which I’m not typically too fond of. I’m typically pretty old school/traditional when it comes to hip-hop but this blend works far better than you’d expect. Sure, the lyrics tend to be over the top and almost try-hard but the atmosphere just creates this eerie, completely hopeless feel. There’s crunchy walls of noise (“Columns”), minimal electronic beats (“Grave Within a Grave”) and semi-normal, trap twinged production (“Persistence”). It’s never as scattered as Third Side Tape though (not a bad thing on there either) which makes it easier to come back to.

Fascinating collection of ideas, definitely lives up to its reputation. Much different than I would've originally anticipated, considering I started with Mista Thug Isolation.

4/5

Elkhorn - The Black River

Cozy, albeit paint-by-numbers American Primitivism. Some of the songs on the first half are really solid but by the time the second half comes around, it all starts blending together. The later tracks tend to drag and use this electric guitar that’s too piercing for the style. Nothing particularly bad about this - there’s some nice moments and it’s a style I’ve come to love. But nothing makes it stand out against the other solo guitar albums out there.

Some more stuff while I'm at it

No idea why Arular stood out so much but I’ve heard it like three times already and it keeps getting better. “Hombre” is such a fucking filthy track but I cannot stop listening to it. The whole album is this giant mash of genres in the weirdest way possible. Everything on the album should be grating as hell - and it kind of is - but it’s also groovy and strangely danceable. Such a weird, awesome album.

Japanese Breakfast was pretty enjoyable but not a standout for the year or anything.

Underachievers was even more disappointing than I was expecting. Same schtick they’ve been doing for a while now but watered down and repetitive. Not a standout among the mix and I can’t say I was able to get through the entire thing. Bummer, I’ve actually liked a few of their projects in the past. Cool production as always - just not on par with their other stuff.

Jedi Mind Tricks had some absolutely incredible production and “I Against I” still remains a standout in the context of the album. But some of the lyrics were a little much for me. Sure they’re part of a persona and I’m used to that in some more hardcore forms of hip-hop - but here they rubbed me the wrong way. Can’t really explain why but a few lines here and there really detracted from what could’ve been a great album.

Felt kind of the same way about DJ Quik. Some outstanding production from one of the founders of g-funk but a lot of the time they were wasted on his poor lyricism. Simple party tracks were nice and the real standout diss track “Dollars & Sense” is classic - but much of this is just gross. Tracks like “Diggin U Out” and “Can I Eat?” are just embarrassing and cringy. Quik fans are always wondering why he never got the respect he deserved but tracks like that are a perfectly reasonable explanation.

>Jar Moff - Financial Glam
>Sound Collage, Plunderphonics
A twenty minute track of two parts. The first few minutes pulse like a giant furnace, and samples include a baby's cry put through filters, a sax undergoing a seizure, an engine, and something that vaguely sounds like a clip from a VHS tape. The noise lets up 15 minutes in, and stays down at that level for the remainder.

I was hoping it would get heavier, but I appreciate the first half of this.

6/10

>Mohammad - Som Sakrafis
>Drone, Electroacoustic
Doom drone, with a cello, contrabass, and oscillators. Meaty, meditative, goosebump-inducing drone. Occasional voices attempt to permeate the heavy oscillator's hum, as the strings drag themselves from one one pitch to another.

6/10

>Konrad Springer - Stack Music
>Post-minimalism, Electroacoustic
"computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar"
I love it when people just make their own instruments to suit their sound. The result is a guitar that blends through an older Berlin synth in Opening, which quietly develops its own harmonies behind the porch-light repetitions of Springer's instrument.

Finale utilizes more sounds you'd expect from EAI, be it samples of train honks or crumbly digital touches, it's difficult to tell what exactly may be the guitar or an accompanying part as the song continues on a surreal journey (that sounds like Under The Sun at one point)

Rondo lives by its name only a little bit, before devolving into dissonant harpsichord strikes. I swear I'm hearing MORE hints of sounds from albums I really enjoyed (this time Kailin - Fracture).

Largo is flavored like Orange Milk, taking direct inspiration from Berlin school with a mosaic of different tones and toy-like percussion, closing the album with a demonstration of how Springer's sound isn't just grit alone. A definite highlight of 2017.

Randy Newman - 12 Songs (1970)
>singer/songwriter

The satire isn't that witty and it lacks the beautiful baroque pop edge of it's successor, Sail Away. Newman awkwardly tries to find his footing as a songwriter here, shifting between piano ballads, rollicking full-band country tunes, and laid-back blues with little to no tact. The main problem here is that the sequencing is so terribly off, none of these styles fit together really well, and the volume changes pretty wildly from track to track. The country tunes fare the best, Newman's idiosyncratic vocals fit the style perfectly and the songwriting is on point, whereas the piano and blues tunes tend to go absolutely nowhere. He definitely improved with his follow-up.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (1977)
>art rock

It's very obvious here that Gabriel is trying to find his footing in new styles of music following his departure from Genesis, and the results are mostly mixed. Frankly, the best songs here are much more in line with his progressive rock work. The undeniable "Solsbury Hill" is gorgeous, and "Here Comes the Flood" is an epic worthy of inclusion on any classic Genesis album. The tracks that dabble more with new wavey styles fare a lot worse. They're not terrible, just unfocused and generally a bit amateurish, very much done by someone not quite accustomed to the style. Definitely a solid debut.

Pita - Get Out (1999)
>noise, glitch

Barebones noisy glitch that relies more on shock factor than anything else. The third track, a eleven-minute monolith of ever-growing noise, is a massive standout, not only of the album but of noise and glitch music as a whole. However, eight tracks remain, and none of them even come close to capturing that same power. Rehberg relies on the same shtick of pumping up the volume when the tracks get into a bit of a lull, which works when used sparingly, but it's overuse on this album dulls any effect it could possibly have. The barebones nature of this album also works against it, long periods are punctuated with little to no sound at all. While this abuse of silence can be done well, it certainly is not here.

Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. - Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. (1973)
>progressive electronic, minimalism

Borden is one of the unsung pioneers of electronic music, for sure. Tangerine Dream and Wendy Carlos may have come first, but the soundscaping here really is second to none, there are worlds lying behind these synth washes. "Easter" is especially wonderful, 19 minutes and not a second wasted. "Ceres Motion" gets a little bit corny as it goes on, but it's corny in that endearing way that can only be done by early electronic music. Cool stuff, and not nearly as wacky as the band/album name may suggest.

>New York Philharmonic / Leonard Bernstein - Le Sacre du printemps (1958)

I wish I understood better the technicalities that set this apart from other progressively avant-garde works of the early 20th century, and exactly what Stravinsky was doing on a granular level, because this ballet was radical enough to incite riots upon its debut in 1913. But I can't comment on it, so I'll talk about how it feels and sounds.

The plot of the ballet involves a woman chosen as a sacrifice in a pagan ceremony celebrating the coming of spring. I think most immediate here is this sense of different voices in the composition: the first several movements are reminiscent of Strauss' Dance of the Seven Veils in how they envoke loud crashes and the orchestra hammering out ugly and unresolved themes in unison to signify the sexual, drunken, primal revelry of the crowd during a celebration of the power of the natural forces. The perspective is eventually shifted to what has to be the female protagonist, which stands in stark contrast with more docile themes performed solo on woodwind instruments for several moments until the clear moment in which she is chosen as the victim as the orchestra returns in unison with this sense of mania.

Well, I won't spoil the rest for you. Even without much of an appreciation for classical music, I will say that with a basic understanding of the plot (remember, it's a ballet...i.e. a visual performance), the meaning attaches itself quite naturally to the music, and the listener may recognize in the music this destructive power of the herd mentality and the willful sacrifice of something innocent and beautiful.

>Thelonious Monk Septet - Monk's Music (1957)

Try as I might, I still don't get the Monk hype. To my impatient ears it's only particularly interesting when he maxes out the complexity of his compositions, which really only happens on "Epistrophy" here, a clear highlight. Not to mention, he has an all-star band here and Art Blakey and John Coltrane do some heavy lifting. In its ideal form, Monk's playing is liberated and ventures into some modal territory where it seems like he could get away with playing just about any note and having it come across naturally. One thing of note is how well-suited this band is to his style--Coltrane modal soloing on the aforementioned track is Monk's analog in some ways, Blakey's rhythms continue to daringly push the pieces to the outer-edge of cohesion at times. Again, and unfortunately, I can really only dig these complex moments, as I find the simpler parts a bit too cool and without much emotion.

>Fela Ransome Kuti & Africa 70 - Expensive Shit (1975)

This album has garnered a reputation as the grooviest thing of all time--an unfair standard to have to meet. I'd heard some live Fela but never studio work, and I will say it seems just a bit stiff in comparison to the cathartic levels of those live performances aimed at the upheaval of the audience's inhibitions, the kind of groove where you have no choice but to submit. Needless to say, the rhythms from the massive percussion section (drums, congas, various shakers satisfyingly fill these performance to the brim) are the main attraction here, and they are unfortunately on the slightly muddier side in this production. It's worth appreciating on especially the title track how similar this is to some American jazz from around the same time, which in turn has African influence in a roundabout way. Joe McPhee, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Joe Henderson had each put out similarly vivacious and maximally groovy releases by this time that I can't help but prefer just a bit more for the direction and complexity they show while still maintaining the groove.

Some Girls is equally as bland as all other Stones albums I've heard. Did not enjoy. Prob 2.5-

Q: Men? A: Devo is a little less charismatic than Meet the Residents but still good. 3.5++

Cars s/t is boring af new wave hitmakers yawn I resent how bland it is, but maybe two good tracks. 2.0-

Grace Cathedral Park - In the Evenings of Regret (2004)
>post-rock, slowcore

The band name says more about this album than I could ever say: Red House Painters worship through and through. It's instrumental, so that sets it apart, but the song structures and the general mood of the album is unmistably influenced by that much superior band. The near-ripoff nature of this aside, it's incredibly pleasant, very easy to drift off too. It's got an unmistakable americana influence that's a big plus, and the longer songs generally don't drag, even if they do tend to repeat themselves.

Due to the current innate lazyness I'll keep these reviews pretty blunt;

>Liturgy - Aesthetica & Renihilation. The guitar riffs are brilliant, otherwise its feels like having some lanky MacDonald's employee scream in your ear after repeating the order three times. Pretty emotive I guess.
>Merzbow - Aodron. I actually quite like this, unlike Pulse Demon there is a proper rhythm atop all sorts of detailed sound effects, subtle in nature and surprisingly comfy.
>Monoton - Blau. This is plain boring really, I mean I've never listened to minimal synth in my life though I wasn't expecting... well, a couple drony synths at most.
>Monoton - 20y++, Add a couple more synth lines and a coherent beat and it feels really quite good, kinda reminds me of my experience with NEU! in a way.

What is XTC like? They're one of the bands that interest me the most though I have no clue what they actually are. I don't want to try any of their stuff yet since my first listen will be akin to a sacred ritual though I can't help but seethe with curiosity. Also try that Serpents album.

Boris With Michio Kurihara - Rainbow (2006)
>psychedelic rock, noise rock

Pretty much a full album of the less metallic, shoegazey sounds prevalent on Pink, but not as fully-realized. Kurihara's shining moments are great, he melds with the band perfectly but his style of playing is so obviously different from Wata and Takeshi's, as is his tone. His tone is the best part, it's super fuzzy and lo-fi, really cool. I wish there was more of a distinct metal influence, because Boris does metal so well, but this is nice.

3.0-

Lnrdcroy - Much Less Normal (2014)
>outsider house, ambient techno

In one overused word—boring. Nearly an hour of beats that go absolutely nowhere and seem totally content with that. Lnrdcroy could function very well as a full-on ambient producer, he's got a definite talent for dreamy, ethereal soundscapes, but his attempts at beat-driven music fall completely flat, there's no progression whatsoever and his beats just have no spunk to them. Maybe his EPs are better.

Lil Peep - Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1 (2017)
>alternative R&B, cloud rap

This is actually a whole lot more competent than I expected it to be. That's not to say it's any good, but Peep's vocals aren't half bad and the beats are at least done well, even if the style is completely insufferable. I never thought we'd get to the point where the market of edgy suicide rap has become oversaturated, but here we are. Peep does bare his soul here, albeit in the most conceited, least believable manner possible. The emo influence is also laughable, it's not even unique anymore. At least he's better than XXX.

Mark And:
>M-Beat - Incredible

Kanzler:
>Einsturzende Neubauten - Let's do it A Dada
I hated the voice at first, and the fact that it was foreign, but I guess I like the slightly off-putting instruments/electronics.

good friend rodriguez:
>Jason Forrest - A Spectacle To Refute All Judgments
Was actually intending to listen to the source of this album. I believe it's resampling dance beats? It's like a weird in-between of Kids & Explosions and Girl Talk: I really enjoy the former, but despise Girl Talk, so this kinda middles out.

whitie:
>Executive Suite 1 - You Believed In Me
Alright. A bit too weighed down by older practices, and a lot more repetitive.

Losers:

EthyBoy:
>Lee Perry - Zion's Blood
why dub? why
I recognize that this group helped establish the genre, but I can't find the enjoyment in separating it from other derivatives.

>Steffen Basho-Junghans - Is (2009)

On this newest release, Steffen Basho-Junghans displays a set of even less conventional playing methods...pieces entitlely composed of harmonic tapping, droning pieces, some avant-garde slide guitar compositions. I've said it before, but it appears even clearer when switching back and forth between his improvisations and other guitarists' just how unique his style is and how it takes its cues from nature, with its gently flowing delivery and subtle imitations--of the wind, of trickling water, of fire, of insects, etc. Its style is reminiscent of only Fahey's most experimental playing, and he shows a great ear for subtlety and delicate grace in how he selects his notes and delivers them.

>Uh thoughts on bad time and NIN
The Good Time soundtrack was ok but only if you don't expect it to be an OPN album. It's pretty much a progressive electronic record ala Vangelis.

The NIN is one of my favorites, but I'm a fanboy, so there is an element of bias. These past two EPs find Trent doing something different with his vocal performance, which is comforting to say the least. The final track on the album is an obvious highlight with a ballsy attempt at being something other than the classic Reznor/Ross work, but I still doubt it achieves what it went for fully.

The guy that recorded it had a cult following, it has some top notch beats and cuts and great verses, and a big part of it is about entering early adulthood and problems that people who grew up in 90s/00s can relate to I guess. I was revisiting it, and it's definitely an 8/10. The production on it is really busy and colorful, like the way the percussion sound vaguely industrial in the first track, and there's a lot of catchy melodies and hooks on it (the weird panning voice on track 5 is my favorite). The orchestral and choral flourishes, plus old synths makes this really fun to listen, kinda reminds me of Active Child or Dan Deacon.

Okay slowly making it through this.

Bill Evans - You Must Believe In Spring

Bill Evans really could do no wrong, eh? I can’t quite pinpoint what makes this standout to me - but it’s something else. Despite having upbeat tracks, the background is kind of morbid, with two originals dedicated to two family members who had recently committed suicide. Though not an original, the closer just happens to be a cover “Suicide Is Painless”. Maybe the back story is just super intriguing to me - but I can’t help but think it adds a lot of emotion and character to the album.

Though this is just a trio, it feels a little bigger than that, with bassist Eddie Gomez in particular just eating up a lot of space with his playing/soloing. Evans is outstanding on piano as usual and he helps bring new life to these standards. The first half is absolutely flawless imo, with the first three tracks serving as some of the best Evans tracks I’ve heard. It tails off a little toward the end, with the MASH theme serving as an odd, somewhat awkward choice (though the title fits the theme) - but really nothing about it is bad.

You can criticize Evans for lacking guts or playing it safe or whatever you want to call it. But in my opinion, this album just proves he can bring beauty and personality to even the simplest of tracks.

I think I stopped making charts because it’s so hard to score hip-hop albums without making the whole fucking thing look ugly. Anyway - some quick thoughts:

[1/2]

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Async

One of the cooler albums I’ve heard this year, with lots of fun dialogue samples (always a plus for me), electronic influences and a little tiny bit of classical flair. Gonna have to come back to it, cause it’s super intriguing.

Heltah Skeltah - Nocturnal

HS is a dope fucking group that I somehow missed out on earlier because people wouldn’t shut up about how underrated Sean Price is. Which I find usually means they actually suck. He’s really tight on this album and his partner Ruck is dope too. They have kind of a mishmash of 90s hip-hop tropes, with reggae-ish flows, dark beats, a little more abstract lyricism than most of the era. Buckshot is an awesome producer and manages to keep this consistently grimy and atmospheric without blending too much of this together. Just weird enough to keep me engaged and head-nodding the whole time.

PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love

A mellowed out PJ is a great thing and makes for one of her best albums since Dry. Probably my second favorite of the ones I’ve heard so far, though it may snag the top spot.
>>
>>74595546
[2/2]

Masta Ace - SlaughtaHouse

Masta Ace makes an anti-hardcore hip-hop album in 1991 and manages to spell his own name wrong (rivaling Warren G in “What’s Next”) which is all you really need to know about this. If you like parodies and hip-hop this is a perfect combination but unfortunately it just wore on me more as it went on. I also think this proves Ace is incapable of making a non-narrative album.

Idles - Brutalism

Very very solid punk. Not incredibly creative and a little repetitive by the end but I like it for what it is.

Nick Cave - Good Son/Eternity
The Good Son is potentially the second best Cave album I’ve heard behind Murder Ballads. Basically everything I like about him in one album minus most of the bad. A few of the songs toward the end are kind of weak but songs like “Weeping Song” and “Lucy” ensure this is a standout. From Her to Eternity was intriguing but honestly a little tooooo grating for my tastes.

Nickelus F - Trick Dice

I love rappers who sound like they have terrible congestion, dark/brooding production and the greatest dunker of all-time - Shawn Kemp (+1 to LUM for this). In other words, this is basically everything I could want out of modern hip-hop. Really really fucking solid. Only problem is the Spotify version is split into sides instead of tracks.

Milo - Who Told You to Think?

Milo continues to be one of the most interesting modern rappers out there. His style is a tad too abstract and… obtuse for me but he always has fascinating ideas packed in. He’s really honed in on a production style that works for him without making him sound too pretentious or annoying. Definitely gonna need more listens but it’s one of the best hip-hop projects I’ve heard this year.

>Sondre Lerche - Faces Down
The nice indie rock sound of this album gets monotonous after a while, the vocals and lyrics are ok but sometimes it feels like those are like the only things going on and well, they are not enough to keep the whole thing interesting.
6.5

>Half-Handed Cloud - Flying Scroll Flight Control
Lovely, I guess... The melodies and vocals are great here, it's nice to see a twee-ish album that tries to go beyond of the standard with all the instrumentation that it puts together. I tend not to have problems with religious topics in music, unless it's albums like this that go full gospel on me, sorry but it gets annoying.
6.5+

This is one of those albums I have no idea why I haven't listened to before, since I love grindcore and PLAY grindcore and this is kind of one of the essentials. Also apparently this is the vocalist from Gridlink? I had no idea. This is so relentless, it's crazy. Fast as fuck but still technical and fun and not just "look how fast i can blast dude lmao". Also apparently the whole album is NGE-.themed? I haven't watched that much NGE but that's pretty cool too lol

uh I think I get a general vibe from your taste for stuff like Stalker/Festen/Hart of London/Satantango/Taxi Driver. But then to me stuff like 12 Angry Men/The Master/One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is kinda weird? Maybe just because they're good films, but they seem weird with the rest of your taste fsr and that makes me think I have the wrong reasons for why you like the earlier mentioned films, making it harder to rec.
>>
>>74597619
Personally i'd place The Master with the former group. Even though it's not very experimental, it is a sort of contemplative film that relies heavily on cinematography to enhance it's story elements.

12 Angry Men and OFOTCN are just two examples of great writing. Personally, I believe that a film can reach perfection based on aesthetics alone, but I also try not to exclude films that do so by other means.

What is your RYM?

(I really need a film class. I chose a creative writing course over one this coming semester and I'm seriously hoping that I made the right choice)

>>
>>74597818
I agree, hands down. There's just much more to think about and more profound statements made there than in There Will Be Blood, etc. Not that they're bad. I also think The Master followed by Inherent Vice is a step in the right direction, even though it was actually Pynchon, which is the unpopular opinion.
