I suppose that your second point is correct, but not all of those 316 votes went to Grimes. There were 316 votes and 9 artists. In the two polls (the strawpoll.com and the strawpoll.me), there are less votes but only one or two artists being voted on. For example, if a Joanna Newsom fan who would vote for her in a poll about her saw a poll where the only two options were Grimes and Bjork, he has no reason to vote in it, since his artist isn't represented. That removes most of the voters in that poll for the sake of this discussion (especially since we don't know which artist they would've picked if given the option between only the two.) In which case, /mu is a terrible place for trying to determine concrete things about anything - especially when it comes to things like purported opinion polls.
There is only one concrete metric /mu (or 4chan in general) has to offer concerning ANY topic: how much time/effort the people who post here are willing to put into posting (positively OR negatively) about that thing. That's it. Which is why anyone with a dire need to rely on /mu's hivemind for any reason (especially validation/invalidation of subjective musical tastes) has a very rude awakening waiting for them when they mature enough to realize that this place actually has no answers for them.
