I've noticed a lot of emo bands have kids in their cover or some old picture. Is it to create nostalgia?
Emo music is a difficult genre for me, it's most likely indie rock. I would dispute that the genre exists apart from recent musical developments in the UK does give it some credence in it being influential enough to have the weight of precedent in its favour as to being a worthwhile term. This is soft rock in the 2000's. I find it difficult to enjoy, it makes me too sad, due to the style of playing. Is it worth persevering with? I tend to think it's a bit of a dead end as a movement.
unfortunately there's not a lot of good emo lately but i do recommend these 2017 releases to everyone
CityCop. - The Same Stories that Never Get Old
Oliver Houston - Whatever Works
Master Sultan - Slug Days

yeah that or it could be an emotional picture that just relates to the lyrics of the album. like, pic related has a lot of lyrics about friendships and that Cameron fellow in particular, and the cover is a picture of him

emo is pretty vast i guess, it can range from post-hardcore to pop punk to indie rock, and then of course there's screamo and the heavier stuff. i'm sure there's something there for you, and there's definitely some upbeat stuff that may not make you sad (if that's your aversion to it). maybe try these:
Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader
Grown Ups - More Songs
