Give me the best ambient has to offer, the créme de la créme. I haven't been able to stop listening to pic rel recently, more specifically tracks 1-3, so anything that sounds close to this would be a godsend. Otherwise, ambient recs in general are much appreciated.
Discuss ambient, post your favorite tracks/albums, let's get dissociative.
Just got Endless Falls on vinyl finally. Was the album that got me into ambient orginally, maybe 5 years ago now. Been playing it non stop
im assuming you've listened to his other stuff?
loscil is really good, particularly first narrows
>>74530911
I have, yeah. All good but not the same sort of melodic, breathing formlessness I'm craving.
Checking out Loscil's First Narrows now, thanks

>>74530911
>>74530844
It's such a simple receipt to making great ambient music
Put only so much progression and variety in your music that it won't be boring. Nothing more or less.
>>74531112
>4/4 beat
4 is a great piece, I love the whole album, but the non-rhythmic pieces entice me the most. 5 and 6 also feel more stagnant, not as much by way of melody
>>74530971
First Narrows is great! Loscil really is a good rec
>>74531162
Really I should say "less-rhythmic", as all music has rhythm, but the unstructured rhythm is what I'm after
>>74530844
I'm a fairly big Biosphere fan, especially his album 'Dropsonde', which is almost like an ambient album fused with nu-jazz percussion.

For me, it opens up this almost hypnotic state that almost no other music offers me. I don't know how to explain it, but it's like I can get lost in the sound, and at the same time my mind can wander anywhere. There's a clarity of thought there, and also a sort of comforting drift, at once independent of each other and connected.
Honest question.

Hi /ambient/. I don't really know your genre well, so apologies for being a dabbler or dilletante or whatever.
I really dig Alio Die's album Deconsecrated and Pure, and was hoping you could suggest something similar. I've listened to a lot of his other stuff and none of it hits me the same way. Basically anything that prominently uses samples of mediaeval vocal music would be nice. Rennaissance/baroque/other classical choral would be cool, too. If there's a subgenre or chart or something like that I could bite into, I'm game. Thanks.

ALIEN AMBIENT
My favorite type of ambient is space music. I used to just listen to it before I went to sleep but now I listen to it in the morning on the way to work to mitigate anxiety and put my mind at ease before I enter the fuckzone of my career.

For me it has a sense of melancholy and somewhat optimistic feeling to it. This'll sound weird but I feel at ease the most while on an airplane, to sit and watch the world go by below me, see the sun chase away the darkness (wherever I'm coming from) with the right track is almost nirvana for me.

>>74554417
this, check /bleep/ as an example. I'd rather a weekly/monthly quality thread where I can gather a bunch of recs
>>74555532
the story of Celer is so sad to me, I have a hard time separating the music from how much of a heartbreaker it is
I'll listen to that album for sure if it's the last one they did together
I love 'How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You...', any recs for stuff of theirs that's similar to that album? he/they have so many albums holy moley
>>74555629
not POSITIVE it is - but it certainly sounds like it is - just released about 3 months before her death.
TFW you discover ambient and all the positive ratings you give start to ruin your RYM average.
>>74555580
nope not him, some anon posted it in a thread of where you post an album and a random date, and if it's your birthday you have to listen to it
it sounds droney idk im bad at describing shit. I love the outro to Gene
who /darkambient/ here

It's gonna be ok anon
>>74556183
go back and listen to your favorite celer album now and cry ;_;
some of the titles of the songs/albums just destroy me
"i love you so much i can't even title this"
like, fuck
Holy fuck has anyone here listened to this? I've liked Peter Gabriel for a while but never listened to Passion and it's legitimately amazing. Idk if you would class it as ambient but it's sort of like tribal ambient/world music.
>>74554017
You got it.
>>74555788
Maybe don't autistically rate everything you listen to
>>74556080
Dead people's things is probably the best DA track I've heard. Anyone have any recs for dark ambient with subtle melodies like that and not just layered white noise
>>74556259
>>74555788
>>74556433
who cares? rateyourmusic should be a personal reflection of ones taste. not rating stuff you like or forcing diversity by hiding your taste just to show off or have a cool rym account defeats the purpose. /rym/ is autistic, don't follow their accounts as examples. my rateyourmusic is littered with my favorite ambient, noise, power electronics, and country albums.

>>74556881
how'd he die? wasn't a very prolific artist I see.
Not exactly ambient but really good chill out music nonetheless
>>74556899
havent listened to this yet
is it more ambient than other ambient post-rock, or just good ambient post-rock (either way ill listen to it soon)
>>74556917
Idk man I was just trying to find that out but had no luck.
If you don't mind really minimilast sounding ambient then check this out.
>>74557082
How would you describe it?
Bump
>>74557476
not him
but it's regarded by many as some of the coldest ambient one can enjoy - especially the second track. Personal favorite of mine. Very immersive, and very good ambient. Play it as you fall asleep.
Sleep Research Facility is ace ambient.
>>74557476
Not him but it sounds like being out in the middle of the Antarctic. Lots of icy windy sounds with occasional synths. Great album but not much variation there
>>74557476
frigid
like a snowy night under the stars behind an abandoned building
>>74557604
this guy
>>74557537
disagree, more variation than one might think - just subtle. again, great ambient
(to be fair i haven't listened to the album in a few months so perhaps my memory fails me)
>>74557636
Yeah there's definitely variation it's just slow even for ambient. Definitely not one I'd recommend for someone not already into the genre but very immersive like you said
think I agree
probably not like Hecker's general variation
>>74542258
>https://aphextwin.warp.net/release/68148-aphex-twin-selected-ambient-works-volume-ii
Holy fuck. This is way better quality than I've ever heard.
>>74557755
Yeah. Still love both though
>>74557898
favorite ambient anon?
>>74557911
Damn that's a tough one. Between hoedh - hymnvs, the disintegration loops and SotL - ATRotD probably. Couldn't pick a favourite. How about you anon?
>>74558042
a very tough one... really like hymnvs so far - maybe you posted that? disintegration loops is ace.
a like a lot of Hecker's more focused albums like Virgins (but that's probably more power ambient leaning and shit). Other than that, I adore a lot of dark ambient like Sleep Research Facility and albums like Stalker (by Lustmord and Rich). Put I am quite partial to more upbeat ambient like Voight's "Pop" in the OP. Ambient is quite a versatile genre so it's hard to say what my favorites are.
Also I'm drunk and not proof-reading so pardon an incoherencies. I'll post my chart if need be.
Good thread guys.
>>74558042
also, never liked SotL for some reason - maybe that will change in the future.
Man.
All of this shit sucks.
>>74558206
not for everyone.
>>74558180
Yeah I was the one who posted hymnvs. I tend to go for darker beatless stuff so gas never appealed to me too much. Really liked harmony in ultraviolet and virgins though. Ever listened to deathprod? Also drunkposting on /mu/ is comfy as fuck
>>74558191
Took me a while to get them but they were basically the artist that got me into the genre so maybe I'm biased.
>>74558222
No, nobody likes this "music", you weirdo. It doesn't even have singing in it.
>>74558372
probably had deathprod rec'd to me in a chart thread but no - never listened. Recommended Deathprod album?
Might try the two beatless tracks on Zauberberg by Gas.
Here:
Zauberberg 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVxnbBkCIJA
Zauberberg 7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xioZ-qBJWXQ
Harmony and Virgins are fantastic - I consider Virgins in my Top 5 t b h.
Drunkposting is great on any board my friend; especially a good ambient thread.
>>74555493
I don't like this guys' ambient
>>74534354
They had an ambient-ish project. Set Fire to Flames
>>74558452

>>74555788
>discover ambient
lmao desu senpai
>>74558473
Really liking that first one cheers. I'd go with Morals and Dogma (>>74556470) to get into deathprod. You should post your chart man.
I tend to like my ambient a little more structured than Eno-like three hour jam sessions. I am fond of a lot of the stuff released on the Energostatic label:

a little old but here you go. would like to see yours too if you get a change brotha
>>74531238
This so fucking much, biosphere is the best.
For all the space ambient lovers, what do you think about Polar Inertia? They are more on the techno side, but I think they still classify as ambient.
>>74559018
My topsters fucked up so this is a really old version and it's mostly /mu/core. I like your taste man. Ever listened to natural snow buildings?
>>74559243
Great taste my man. I don't have it on my chart but TOTBL is fantastic - Deathconsciousness the same. And wow, actually in the last 2 weeks I had it rec'd to me. I listened to the The Dance of the Moon and the Sun.
"A Ten Guardian-Spirits Motherfucker" was mind cleansing. I should listen to it again. Any rec's my man? Fantastic taste.
>>74559018
an extremely good chart, but death grips? seriously?
>>74559327
yeah, i think Niggas on the Moon Pt.1 was actually really good.
>>74559347
god damn, I meant the first part of Jenny Death
T O O D R U N K
>>74559286
Thanks mate I appreciate it. Natural snow buildings have a massive discog and it's all decent - The winter ray is good Post-Rock ish ambient. Also just got into Last Days - they're pretty good kinda ambient classical. You got any recs for me? Been meaning to get into Autechre and OPN.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSMaB_Fzks0
>>74559365
You into slightly more experimental music?
Autechre has great expertimental IDM (see Confield and Draft 7.30)
OPN favorites are Replica and R+7 (Returnal to a slightly lesser - but it IS more ambient i m o)
All four (or five) albums are great. Replica (by OPN) is easiest out of all of them.
kjvalium.bandcamp.com
>>74559482
Yeah I like experimental shit. Just listening to Returnal now. Loving it so far - that transition from noise to ambient is sexy as fuck
>>74532284
musique concrete
>>74559602
Yeah man, the initial noise is off putting to newcomers of that genre (if you are one) but Pelham Island Road is orgasmic - easily one of my favorite (power) album songs of all time - let me know if you enjoy it.
>>74559665
Listened to a bit of noise (mostly power electronics though). You heard any Navicon torture technologies or Sutcliffe jugend before? If you like Whitehouse you'd like them too
>>74559769
Not at all.
If you're not too lazy, essential albums by them? Great taste.
Also, where you live out of curiosity? Good shit.
>>74558739
I know I listened to it. People like Scaruffi and Minuszero have rated it high but I don't like any of his stuff personally.
>>74559018
Nice taste. it's kinda weird but I have a good half of these albums among my favorites too. love the alva noto and ae combos
>>74559798
NTT - Gospels of the Gash
SJ - When pornography is no longer enough
Are the only ones I've listened to tbph. Enjoyed them though. I'm in the UK near Birmingham how about you mate?
>>74559903
USA - Missouri
Nice to see someone has similar taste though. Need more rec's or just wanna chat? Favorite genre if you had to pick just one?
>>74559903
also ill check those out
very drunk s
>>74560069
Yeah man I'd love to. Loved that song btw you should like this it's got a very similar feel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFi0n_odlh8&app=desktop
Tough to pick a favourite. I'd say my favourite albums are mostly Post-Rock but 80% of the genre is pretty awful. Ambient probably overall. You?
>>74560085
What you drinking?
>>74560194
Hmm... (power) ambient has affected me the most I think. There really is something...long-lasting about it. Next to that IDM, some techno, or glitch. Most post-rock is cheesy shit I M O (but not all). If I had to choose one for eternity, as a glance, modern ambient.
Still listening to that track btw, but its great so far.
What is some genres you generally dislike?
>>74560213
Also
I was the previous poster.
a lot of four loko (cheap shit)
>>74560411
Hey man, that's what poor college kids live on no worries
>>74543767
He said he was considering doing a cassette re-release once he found all the extra SAW2 tracks.
>>74560392
Not too clear on what power ambient is. Is it just like a more aggressive louder ambient? I agree about most Post-Rock being cheesy - really hit or miss for me. I'm open to most genres but hip hop and EDM, house etc. never really appealed to me. What don't you like?
>>74560437
Thankfully I am a poor college kid
>>74560525
power ambient is considered a...pseudo-new genre by some.
I consider it a real genre. Here these tracks and maybe it will convince you:

I'm going through Gas' discography
So I listened to Gas' s/t album and it had some cool ideas in it, but it felt very long-winded and it could've been much shorter.
Zauberberg felt like a much more realised and matured album compared to the first, a very good album imo. Not perfect, of course. Gotta listen to it again to really get a clearer opinion.
Also listened to Oktember, which was good as well. Still though, the two tracks could've been a bit shorter, and maybe some variation to them.
I still gotta listen to Modern EP, completely slipped my mind when I went into this. So what are your guys' opinions on his albums as Gas? I'd love to hear em.
>>74560568
Never listened to that hecker album before. Might check it out now. Don't Sunn O))) call themselves power ambient?
>>74560630
Zauberberg is his best though

Relentless
Anyone else find Boards of Canada to not be "true" ambient?
>>74562018
They have ambient tracks, but most of their songs are downtempo and IDM.
>>74562018
I'm actually starting to agree with this more and more. They are like ambient for people that don't actually love ambient. Too much overpowering drum in their best tracks. Always jarring whenever I return to one of their albums.
