it was an unreleased re-release that was gonna come out in 2014, i got it from sophies floorboard, https://sophiesfloorboard.blogspot.com/search?q=midwest+pen+pals , perhaps because its a leak it wasn't finished all the way? i like the way the drums sound, but if its your favorite album then i think your opinion would take precedent in knowing what sounds good. why is it your favorite album? what makes it so good to you? not to imply that its bad, just want to see from your point of view. have you heard knola? senffs new band?

knola played in my basement a few years ago :D their full length is even better than their EP i think, i hope those guys get back together to make some more tunes sometime

but hey my opinion's no better than yours, especially if we're just talking how things sound. i'll offer why i love the album since you asked though-

a lot of my favorite emo sounds kind of juvenile, it sounds like it was made by teenagers in a basement. midwest pen pals literally was teenagers in a basement, but it also just nails that feel for me. (other bands like this are Morning Effort, Family Might, and of course Merchant Ships if you want more examples). it's just raw teenage angst, whiny and all. yet some of those feelings are timeless ('so goes my life, weekends at home')

regarding the rough recording quality, it just adds to the charm of it all- they just recorded it with the means they had as teenagers, to get anything out there. it seems more fitting to record a project like this in a basement than in a recording studio, if that makes sense
