What the fuck, why. They'll delete genre generals but they'll leave celebrity discussion threads up?

Got a package from Elffor today with his latest couple albums and the new Aura Negativ. Stoked to listen to them, especially new AN. Heard a preview and it sounds great.

But I have to work through the rest of my backlog first, never thought i'd have a sizable backlog of physical media.

Just put on pic related.

Why is Batushka playing all these major metal festivals in Europe all of a sudden?
>>
So we got Ulcerate, Pyrrhon, and Howls Of Ebb getting it done these few years in terms of technical stuff.

We got Oranssi Pazuzu, Alcest, and Litourgiya doing the atmostuff.

But where are the bands who offer straight up raw as fuck riffage? Who's at the forefront of that?
>>
>>74500910
It's a band created exclusively to make money so of course they're gonna do the most profitable thing.
>>
>>74500963
Finland seems to be at the forefront of that from what I can tell. Bands like White Death, Horna, Sargeist, etc.

I'm mainly into american black metal lately though so I can't say what's the "cutting edge" for modern european riff based black metal.

>THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION--THE METAL YEARS

>In theory, metal is today's real rock and roll--the music of the people. It's basic, it's rude, kids love it, parents hate it. But the closer you look, the stupider and more delusory it seems. Metal isn't basic--it cultivates a pseudo-virtuosity that negates content. The dreams it promulgates are usually foolish and often destructive. Eighty per cent of the "people" who like it are male, and 98 per cent of them are white.

>We get the feeling Penelope Spheeris went into this sequel to her L.A. punk documentary enamored of the theory and came out dismayed by the facts. After interviewing dozens of performers, several groupies, one self-promoting impresario, and a woman cop, she still obviously admires the manic dedication and hang-loose irreverence of metal's musicians and fans. But the evidence does pile up. Sex talk that at first seems purely bawdy is gradually revealed as the usual locker-room misogyny--musician after musician observes that a woman who'd sleep with him would sleep with anybody. Drugs have gone out of fashion, but not alcohol. In one truly horrifying sequence, W.A.S.P.'s Chris Holmes, reclining in a swimming pool wearing full leathers, pours two bottles of vodka down his throat as his mother looks on with a nervous smile.

>L.A.'s atypically glam scene is where the hot American metal bands hail from these days, but that's a new development--of the six elder statesmen who volunteer their tarnished wisdom, only Alice Cooper got his start in the showbiz capital. Maybe that's why the old guys make so much more sense than the young ambition addicts whose mercifully truncated music is the film's ostenisble subject. More likely it's that they're successful enough to have turned into elder statesmen and smart enough to have succeeded. This movie bombed because it got panned in metal's word-of-mouth underground. Nonfans will learn a lot from it.

I guess glam really is nu-male repellent

Let's talk serious about this album.

The songwriting is impeccable. It's way too brilliant to let become marginalized into a meme.

I feel this album has made a serious impact on me and I don't think i'm the only one. I feel it touches my very soul, though I can't fully understand why since the writing is so cryptic.

Does anyone else feel like this? Any thoughts?

Please refrain from shitposting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tv-e9DJqK4

this is all I can contribute to the whole situation. In the end, you have to get your boats to a safe haven at some point in time. Varg on the other hand, had the triangular opposition going for him until about 2005 (ish), then there was the big break and influx of target practice (and in no small volume either). So the situation we find ourselves in now is delicate and difficult, but will Varg, of all black metallers, be the one to move us out of it? I have my doubts.

Czechs are very into experimental and jazzy stuff

Slovakia is something of a mix between Poland and Czechs. One one hand Slovaks love Czech's Jazzy structures and style (like Dissonance), on the other hand, they are very in your face Polish Brutal Death Metal (like Erytrosy). Unlike Czechs, they are not into grindcore as much, and more into Thrash / Death, like Poles, but they still regain some of the experimentalism, albeit it's not ass out-there as Czechs.
>>
Hungary is on the other hand a mix of Romanian Metalcore / Groove Thrash / Death and Austrian pungent deathgrind. There isn't much from Hungary to boast, but they have bands like Extreme Deformity that sounds very Austrian, while on the other hand, they have bands like Necropsia that sound like Machine Head.

Sanatorium, man. They are very essential, and I prefer there 90s output with the forests on their covers.

Amorbital
Apoplexy
Contempt
Decay - The Planet of Animals
Dehydrated
Dementor (I don't like them, but they are probably the most known)
Depresy (another well known band they have this melodic black / death style)
Dissonance
Erytrosy
Gladiator (early stuff, they later moved to pop rock)
Insepultus

Currently I am listening to the newest Soulburn and Morta Skuld. Strange albums. Soulburn is continuing their Black / Doom with Death style, while Morta did a weird, albeit enjoyable mix between Humanity Fades / Surface.

Anyway about Bulgaria
>>74506802
alphabetically
Brainstorm (!)
Corpse (still active after all these years, their debut album had some notoriety)
Foeticide (my personal fave)
Incarnation (they had a hilarious Immortal-tier video, but they also had a very good EP)
Necromancer (ambitious band, they almost made it)
Past Redemption (!)
Powerdrive (obscure, but Bulgarians should respect their album)
Scapegoat

And, from the rookies
Enthrallment

Keep in mind, that I still learn about Bulgarian scene. I would say that Bulgarians have this certain Russian roughness in their sound, albeit they remind me of some early Czechs demos. Don't know why.

Eh... South Africa was the only country that had some shit going, but it was because most of the bands were composed of white dudes
anyway:
Gutted Remains
Voice of Destruction
Retribution Denied
Malignant Saviour (this one is interesting, because they are more known than they should be)

Also, compilations
Death of Africa
and
Black Cathedral and Other stories

Namibia had also this one band that had some shit going Arcana XXII (they played Power Metal, though)

Otherwise, I only know some stuff from Botswana, like Crackdust and Wurst.

Most of the african countries fall into the rookie territory, which I'm not as good as when it comes to the 90s. Currently everything grows, and it's pleasing to see finally these countries being creative when it comes to music and metal

If you want GOOD War Metal, Australia and Canada specializes in that style, beside the obvious like Conqueror / Revenge, Bestial Warlust, they also had
AUSTRALIA
Anatomy, Darklord, Deadspawn (don't remember if they were War Metal enough), Hecatomb, Martire, Sadistik Exekution (do they count?), Slaughter Lord

CANADA
Antichrist, Cremation, Damnation, Procreation, Sacramentary Abolishment, Voor

keep in mind, that it's hard for me to differentiate between pure War Metal and bestial Black / Death

No problem. I study DM for the last 6 years.
It's funny, because I thought of myself as a Thrasher. The problem started when I wanted to make a top 100 list of the best Thrash / Death / Black metal albums. Death was done almost instantly, with BM it took few days, but for all my life, I couldn't finish the Thrash Metal one.

I still love 80s Speed / Thrash the most.

also, it's worth noting that Martire's debut from 2012 (albeit they started in 80s) is a treat for audiophiles. As one of the reviews mentioned, you can hear delightfully every hit of the drums

That dude was me.
My top 10?
Only about the albums I physically own

DM
1.Sepultura - Morbid Visions
This is basically where it started for me. I liked Max Cavalera's other band and I was young and impressionable. I bought myself a lot of Sepultura's remasters and started from the beginning. I already knew bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Danzig, Mercyful Fate, Blind Guardian, and most of the Metal lite, but I wasn't prepared for this.

2.Sarcófago - I.N.R.I.
They are known as BM originators, but one thing that was important for me was that these guys were young, snotty punks. In many ways they remind me of the different times.

3.Malevolent Creation – The Ten Commandments
Malevolent is something of a Death Metal heroes for me. My adventure started with Warkult, but Retribution and this one are my faves.

4.Obituary – Cause of Death
After I fell in love with Sepultura, I instantly started digging more of that Roadrunner roster, I bought this album. From the first note to the last, it was pure greatness.

5.Vader – Ultimate Incantation
They have a special place, due to my country of origin, as they were the first to break from the "iron courtain". Their first album was the result of 10+ years of hard work. It's not perfect, but at the same time it was their ultimate statement on Death Metal.

6.Nocturnus – The Key
During the earliest days, when I fell in love with Dan Seagrave's art, this album stood out from others due to the keyboards, but not done in a cheesy way. Great songwriting

7.Autopsy – Mental Funeral
Every song on that album is a hit. All killers, no fillers, even if there are actually fillers, between some of the songs.

8.Morbid Angel – Covenant
Yup.

9.Pestilence – Spheres
I still don't own Consuming Impulse, otherwise I would put it here instead, but on the other hand, I feel like this album has too much hate. Visions from Within was a great song to drink alcohol with friends.

10.Bolt Thrower – Realm of Chaos
Hell yeah
>>
Any good Romanian bands?
I only know Bucovina, Aabsynthum and Whispering Woods.
>>
>>74507281
and the top 20 would be
11.Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten
12.Gorefest - False
13.Brutality – When The Sky Turns Black
14.Carnage – Dark Recollections
15.Ceremonial Oath - The Book of Truth
16.Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
17.Loudblast - Disincarnate
18.Napalm Death – Utopia Banished
19.Sentenced - North from Here
20.Mortification – Scrolls of the Megilloth

in regards to Speed / Thrash
in no particular order, because I never really put that much thought, would be

God-tier
Hexx, Realm, Sanctuary, early Exodus, early Megadeth, early Sodom, Dark Angel, Forbidden (albeit they were more technical than others), Wolf Spider, early Dragon, Kreator's debut, Vio-Lence

Good-tier
early Flotsam Jetsam, Death Angel, Overkill, Carnivore, Hallow's Eve

I would have to prepare better, because I am a little drunk, though. I would certainly dig up some obscure stuff, because what I posted is too obvious.
>>
>>74507341
If it makes you feel better, I don't know the bands you mention and I'll add them to the list

The problem with Romania is that it has a lot of the Metalcore / Tough Guy stuff.

BUT, Romania still have some gold.

Bestial records were probably the best, because they had most of the notable bands

Altar (only their debut)
Avatar (when they played Melodic Black / Death)
Deimos
Dies Irae (they changed the name to Wargasm)
God (they moved to Portugalia)
Gothic
Grimegod
Makrothumia
Necroticism (they didn't officially released the album, but it's still available on the net)
Protest (different one from Slovakians)
Taine
Ultimatum (probably the best band)

Looking at this list, you like Doom / Death, albeit it also has this Gothic feel, unlike Finland.
>>
>>74507281
If you like vader - ultimate incantation you should check out the 2015 re release of the morbid reich demo. It has fantastic sound for the first time (previously only shoddy cassette demos were floating around) and puts ultimate incantation to shame if you can believe it. Overall good taste !
>>
>>74507406
>Altar
Thanks man, really grateful.
>>
>>74507439
>you should check out the 2015 re release of the morbid reich demo
heh, I already did. Albeit I had their demo compilation as well

As a matter of fact, I recommend getting Live in Decay remaster, it has some unpublished songs, and it's Vader at its most primal, when they had a different vocalist.

I still hope that they will do a compilation of their pre-1989 stuff, it could easily be 2cds. The whole world should hear the Thrash Camp Live demo.
>>
also, if we talk about Vader,
Ultimate Incantation had a different session, that was made in Sweden by the same guy who did first Entombed.

It is available on Polish blogs, I even contributed with my findings. There is no complete version, but from what we gathered so far, the original version was much more Black Metal than Death, if I can say it. Vocals were much more rougher. It sounded more like Necrolust demo, rather than Morbid Reich, which is probably why Peter scrapped them, because he was a buttblasted perfectionist. I bet that if Vader re-released the original version of their debut, it would make waves among the Black Metal collectors for sure.
>>

>>74507560
Dark Half?

Mexicans love Thrash / Death, so it shouldn't be a problem
>>

When I think about it, Holocausto was probably the first War Metal band, especially that they even dubbed their style that way. And music-wise they played a very rough and amateurish version of Black / Death / Thrash.

Yeah i've heard Live in decay and it's interesting but a bit too raw for me production wise to consider it a proper vader release (if that makes sense). But certainly good as a historical insight into the development of their sound.
>>
>>74507507
any snippets from this other session would be appreciated though
>>
>>74507720
>but a bit too raw for me
Not only for you. One of the reasons that it wasn't published before was because Peter considered it too raw

I like it, though. It's not what I usually listen, but in that case, I think it fits

also, classic
Tyrants of Hell / Tyrani Piekieł

You can tell me Bruce is better all day, but he can never, and will never, be able to sing the lower register growls like Di Anno can. Wrathchild and the title track are among my favorite Maiden songs. Everyone was at their best here.

Di'Anno showed more range on their s/t than Bruce ever did. Also, Bruce can suck it, he's as overrated as is TNOTB
>>
>>74509842
TNOTB had like, what, 3 good songs? Maybe 4. The title track was pop metal, and almost felt like filler to be honest. No one will argue Hallowed be thy name being their No.1 song, but there are better Bruce albums. Piece of mind was superior to Beast, and Beast doesn't even touch Powerslave in terms of number of good songs.
>>
>>74509935
Powerslave, Seventh Son, Somwhere In Time are all great, Powerslave being my favorite, but yeah, Piece Of Mind was good, too. Maiden went down the drain from there, desu.

It means emotion spans more than just "dude sad lyrics :(" and anything that claims to be emotional while falling back on "emotion" of such shit caliber should be laughed at and ridiculed.

At first I thought this album was pretty meh, but on repeated listens this is definitely the top RoB album so far. Just phenomenal.

nothing on gateways is on the same level as altars/blessed/covenant, and steve tuckers growling sounds generic as hell

Summoning Redemption begs to differ. Also, Formulas hardly sucks, Heaving Earth was good and Invocation of the Continual One is their best song.

It's not just that Paul was a better singer, there was a different style to what Maiden were trying to achieve when Paul was the vocalist.
Their first two albums are by far the most straightforward in their entire discography, songs averaged between 3-4 minutes and there was more of a focus on riffs and bass interplay than there was on vocal melodies. Paul's gruff singing voice was just the cherry on top to what Maiden were trying to do at the time, he never hogged most of the glory that the band were trying to create. With Bruce on the other hand there's a night & day difference between the role of vocals from Killers to NOTB and it's not just because Bruce sings in a higher register. Choruses went on for far longer with Bruce trying to steal as much spotlight as possible, and because of this new chorus-driven over riff-driven style Maiden were now going for songs could be ruined depending on how annoying Bruce wanted to be. Paul Maiden was for people who wanted to pull out a guitar and jam along, Bruce Maiden was for people who stand in front of a bathroom mirror with their hairbrush doing theatrical singalongs.

>>74510293
That's right, Invocation is their career best.

The build up for the middle riff, as the riff itself, is fucking great.

You're right. I've always had a predilection for the Di Anno era Maiden. It has a sound that I can always come back to and enjoy, where as Bruce era stuff can start to feel sterile and stale after repeated listening.
