I hate most things -core. It's just not my thing even if it's not a hackjob. One of my friends liked this shit, and everything he played made me ambivalent at best. The few things I liked didn't come from the 'core' part.
Damage Done might _border_ on this general melodic core shit from 2000s. But to hell with it, I'm prepared for some cheese

Except Gojira has nothing to do with DM from a musical perspective. I never said that, but you should realize that Gojira from a musical perspective is much closer to metalcore like Earth Crisis and Converge than to actual death metal. Also, if you like Gojira but dismiss 80s and early 90s DM then you really should hang yourself.

>>
>>74491036
Just felt like there's too much going on. I mean, I'm still not too used to metal, more to standard verse chorus verse stuff, so DM sometimes overwhelms me with the amount of change. I can tell there's something there but I don't consciously grasp what is it.

Well yeah plenty of bands didn't suffer the sheer drop in quality Morbid Angel did when they went from Altars to Blessed but very few death metal albums, even metal albums in general can pack in as many great riffs as Altars does while not coming off as unfocused, wanky, or overdone. If you can't enjoy an album like Altars Of Madness then your taste in death metal is severely flawed.

It's like they're allergic to trying to write something good. Every riff they write needs to be as cluttered and frantic as can be with no regard to tone or direction.
Off the bat this is just another death metal album in name only, it has the growls, it has the distortion, and it has the hyper fast drumming, but everything is assembled so mechanically together, topped off with such digital cleanness and shiny pristine, like it wants to seem heavy but is so ashamed to be a part of the scene. There's no passion here, it's like some snobby mallcore kids tried their hands at making "intelligent" death metal, they wrote a checklist for what they thought would be necessary to count as death metal and then filled it with needless complexity for that "intelligent" aspect. Riffs vary between being fast and intricate slurries of notes to being basic, but still fast, death metal chugs you've heard a million times over, everything wrapped up in a brick walled to fuck production where bass is only audible when the band wants to remind you that they do indeed have a bassist. Songs are long, aimless, and twist and turn without any bit of focus. Riff (and I use that term quite loosely here) leading into riff leading into solo leading into riff comprises the song writing ideas here, with some occasional orchestral samples thrown in to make this album seem grander than it is. It's a nauseating and headache inducing experience, while not as annoying as Rings Of Saturn or Dawn Of Dementia, it's equally as flashy and unnecessary. Completely irredeemable garbage with not one decent moment in its duration.
>>
>>74491324
It's not really enjoyment that's necessary, but a respect for the early significance of Abominations of Desolation, the impact of Altars of Madness, and the songwriting of Blessed are the Sick.

Good Deathcore:

Necrophagia (demos)
Poison (Ger)
Necrobutcher (Bra)
Blood (Ger)

This is what was considered deathcore in the 80s, before the term was stolen by people mixing death/grind and metalcore in the late 90s.

True Satanic Black Metal are bands such as Darkthrone, Arya Satankampf, Graveland, Gestapo 666, Satanic Warmaster, Beherit and Impaled Nazarene. You can listen to Metallica if you want, but you do not understand the true Hitleric Nazi black metal thing. You just poser and you can fuck off the whole scene. Black Metal is real music, not intended for animals like you, but the real Satanic Misantrophics who do not care like you clown from. Black Metal is an elite music, and you do not understand it. None of you understand the real Satanism. You ridiculous little kids. World view is based on hitlerism, on a personal level Satanic individualism, collective level hitleric fascism. Without a theoretical understanding of the occult, it is useless to dream of understanding wotanic worldview. None of you can not understand Wotanism, because you are all intellectually at the same level as the earthworms. You can not reach an elite level of Satanism, so why even dream about it. Satanism and Black Metal are the elite. For real misantrophes.

late reply but anyway
Until I got into DM, I often thought how prog was such a good concept but at the same time a wasted opportunity. Technically, it started it all: unusual composition, experiments with song structure, etc etc. And not to mention, it had some decent musicians there.
But that's about where it's good qualities end. Created by pseudo-intellectual hippies, it is a wussy music for '70s fedoras and numales. It has zero energy and often borders on lounge music. Instead, it brings pointless "unorthodox" instruments like flutes, fiddles, klaxons, fart pillows, etc. This underlines the key problem with it—its features often lacked point.
No wonder it turned to wank for the heck of wank really quick. 10 minute drum solos, 1 hour long compositions, unneeded improvisations/jams—everything just screamed "tired and forced" about it. Heck, even King Crimson, despite being a touchstone for metal and producing such a masterpiece as Red (the track), often filled their albums with jams and simply filler.
So while I still do enjoy some of it, I feel that DM basically took their ideas and made them good.

This album is pretty much what's wrong with modern metal in general. It's like these guys are secretly ashamed that they're making death metal (or deathcore), so they want to add a bunch of bells and whistles to it to make it more dignified or intelligent or whatever. In reality, if this was just a generic deathcore album I might actually have enjoyed it more. (MitochondrialAdam explained this copying of various characteristics of classical music/jazz/whatever as 'trying to create the appearance of musical value without making a statement'. I think that's elegant enough.) In reality, despite (and in fact because of) their diligent plastering of doodads and one-shot gimmicks to every inch of this, it still reeks of poorly-realized ideas and contrived... well, contrived everything, really. I can just copy and paste what I said in my Colors review about the construction of this and the wrongness of the essential musical motivation underlying it (I can also do this for any album by Obscura or Fleshgod Apocalypse or whatever tech death band people graduate to after getting tired of Warped Tour material these days), because they suffer the same issues adapted to different genre frameworks, but I won't, because I want to put a bit more effort into explaining my dislike.

Honestly, this album is one of my least favorite things in existence. It's a tortuously long 31 minutes of utter nonsense. It's almost enough to make me want to stop listening to metal. A ton of the attraction that people seem to have for it is based on its "eclecticism", but that's its most utter failure, since it uses those tacked-on elements to distract from its idiotic composition Rather than pulling them into tracks that manipulate tension well, and act as actual songs from beginning to end, these guys make slideshows of unrelated sections slapped together with no musical sensibility.

As much as I hate using the term Reddit to describe something, Beyond Creation are by far the most Reddit technical death metal band to ever exist.
This doesn't imply that they're the worst, in fact, out of the slew of modern wank shit bands that shovel out albums like a nigress plopping out another child to make her welfare check bigger, Beyond Creation are actually in the range of being tolerable (then again I only ever listened to their first album so maybe their newer stuff suffers from schizophrenically throwing in carnival calliope-sounding minor scale sweep frenzies punctuated with elongated tapping sessions to contrast with the cleaner jazzy breaks that sound like the background music for cell phone commercials). The reason I refer to Beyond Creation as a reddit incarnate of a band lies between the image they've cultivated of themselves, but first let me define what I see reddit entails as a term.
Reddit refers to a juvenile infatuation with flashy parlor tricks and hype culture. Redditors love Alestorm because "Bro pirate metal!" while being completely unaware of a band like Running Wild due to the latter's lack of magazine sponsored hype. Reddit loves Opeth out of being shocked that a band would use acoustic folk, blues, and progressive rock influences so heavily to amplify their death metal sound, it's not about the sound it's about what goes into the sound for them. For a reddit audience the process is more important than the product, being ornate and digestable trump being sincere and straightforward.
I, like many others, heard of this band because of typical ADHD tech death kiddies being amazed over trivial matters like how the bassist uses a fretless model and even has some "solos" throughout the album. But underneath this surface-level adoration of audible bass in the modern era of digitally compressed death metal, Beyond Creation have nothing to cultivate their image.

I'm pointing to the fact that in my heart of hearts there is this spot for commercial metal and if you look at the whole Teitanblood situation (the dissoshit commercial cashcows) you should realize that no matter how much you open your heart towards the core of what constantly has been regarded as metal, you will find nothing but unfavorable junk as time progresses. Oh and let me just say it HAS progressed for Teitanblood as it were. "Blood has been shed" is a play on words more than fitting in this situation. My god the times truly have been better.

So I'm right now doing a blindfold test if I can spot the differences between a FLAC version of an album and a 192k rip. The album has been put into a playlist twice in shuffled order and I'm writing down on a piece of paper which track number is which rip. The album is Entombed - Clandestine (reflective of my favorite music and style of production). Equipment is high end studio monitors and a friend made sure nothing is bottlenecked on this side of the equation.
>>
>>74492255
FLAC vs 192k is too easy. Really, 192 is audibly shitty regardless of your stand on FLAC vs MP3.

>>
>>74491827
First, metal is a bit poor choice for this. From what I read most people say it's kinda pointless with music that has lots of distortion—basically noise. That's just like "hi-fi lo-fi". The best way to test it is trying very "clean" music with high dynamic range and no noise—classical, jazz, whatever.
Second, 192 vs FLAC will probably be noticeable. I can even tell the difference between 192 and 320 kbps sometimes. But 320/V0 and FLAC, it's barely discernable, especially on my budget equipment.
That said, I also tried it with $120 setup of planar headphones + amp, couldn't tell the difference and if it was there, it was too small to care.

Yes, but not to the point where it becomes redundant and the file size is proportionately larger than the quality. Stick to 320/V0. FLAC is a shitty meme.

Just a friendly reminder that this unfunny cunt has a quarter of a billion views and 1.4 million subscribers. The vast majority of his fans are highschoolers and college-aged kids, many of them being musicians who are easily impressed by guitar playthrough videos and bands doing meme covers of non-metal songs. This generation of metal was a result of mallcore kids who grew up listening to nu-metal, melodeath and early 2000's death/metalcore. The future generation now spends their time watching technicool bands doing guitar playthrough videos, videos of Jared Dines doing metal versions of X, and basic P4k garbage (Deafheaven, Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, the list goes on...). We're currently in the transitional phase, trip-hop, shoegaze, and glitch-hop are all the rave right now when it comes to bands seeking out other genres to dilute their sound with. The next generation will have fully embraced this change in the zeitgeist of metal and will churn out water-down garbage accordingly. Just remember, stuff like this is what's going to be elevated to "classic" status a decade from now.

While this is all depressing one thing that the new generation of metalheads are really going to miss out on is the hilarious autism that they're used to be. There's not going to be another Varg who went from burning churches, to stabbing old band's guitarist to death, to going to prison and releasing some Runescape sounding albums, to coming full circle while living in the middle of Nowhere, France recording videos in his jeep about saving the white race from Judeo-Christianity while promoting tabletop RPG's as a method of homeschooling children. There's not going to be a madman like Famine, Mirai, or Seth. The scene now attracts snapback wearing normalfags who send out snaps of themselves taking bong hits. Name one person in the djent/deathcore/tech death whatever scene whose personality and escapades are genuinely fun to read about. That's one big thing that'll be absent from the next generation.

I'm not sure who this compilation is for, but there's some stuff I like and some stuff I dislike. All in all I can only say this : _
>>
>>74492589
Yep, pretty much. Try 320 kbps vs FLAC. Probably won't hear the difference at all. Any way, as I said, metal is the worst genre to try this, second only to harsh noise and lo-fi. Especially when we're talking about stuff affected by "loudness wars".
I always go 320 or V0 when I can. 192 is decent, but it's pretty much a minimum quality at which things don't sound shitty (yet). 320 is basically the point of diminished returns, from my personal experience and from what I read.
FLAC is basically "hey, this hi hat at this part sounds a tad bit more clean, totally worth 2x file size": the format. And don't even get me started on 96 kbps 24 bit, this is where you get 1 gig at least per album, and whether the difference is audible at all is still the point of online argument.

Oranssi Pazuzu for being the first band that really did the psychedelic black metal thing. Took the whole psychedelic black metal thing that was tried in records released before their first one by the likes of Menace Ruine, Nachmystium, and A Forest Of Stars to the extent where it's essentially its own style now.

If you listen to early Neofolk like Di6's The Wörld Thät Sümmer and Brown Book, or C93's Imperium and Christ And The Pale Queens Mighty In Sorrow, you'll see that it's basically martial post-industrial accompanied by dronning acoustic to give it a timeless and solemn effect. Eventually the guitar was brought to the forefront, the noise was minimised thought never dismissed and the compositions started resembling madrigals from the renaissance as heard through Carlo Gesualdo's nightmares.

As much as I love ALL of the big names in industrial and related subgenres, there's no single project I've listened to more extensively than NWW.
>>
>>74494842
Well, I still enjoy the music, but I realise that within that sphere of bands and projects you don't really need more than one or two examples to consider the while style thoroughly explored.
>>
>>74494837
If you know TPM then you might want to add Swastikas For Noddy, though it's closer to the earlier examples I gave you here >>74494528
You know, so as to complete the whole 86-96 golden era
>>
>>74494832
>>74494879
What's the appeal of NWW and purely industrial music in general? I love neofolk but this is something really hard to swallow
>>
>>74494442
But those are developments that didn't start taking off until the 2010s. Like, this isn't the first time it has happened with metal either. Death Metal and Black Metal also started in the mid-late 80s, though didn't really become their own thing until the 90s. It has also been the other big newish development this decade in black metal that isn't post-Paracletus attempts at technical black metal and blackgaze (the latter's Alcest may also count, too as Écailles de lune came out in 2010.)

I'm pretty much in the same place, then. I enjoy it but I feel like there's a lot they could do with the genre that no one really does.

>What's the appeal
Dude, what's the appeal of any music at all? It clicks with some people, while it does nothing for others. It's not something that you'll suddenly like if it's explained to you.

I've always been attracted to sound as a pure phenomenon and to the idea that any sound is inherently music as long as there's intent behind it (even if that intent only goes as far as recording it and maybe editting it a bit). Industrial music and offshoots owe a lot to dadaism and the collage technique, as well as post-modernist literature and the infamous cut-up technique, which is really just collage as applied to literature, which also makes it a sort of second cousin to Musique Concrète, in which previously recorded sounds are modified and separated from its original intent in order to create a new soundpice. All of this has always appealed to me, and all of this is present in industrial music, so it would be natural that I'd find pleasure in that kind of sound-based art. But it's not something I could coerce someone into liking based merely on explanations as to what the "appeal" is.

I like making "music" myself (whether it's music or not is eternally debatable and it'll always come down to either accepting that everything is music or nothing is) and Steven Sapleton and Philip Jeck are basically my two biggest influences. Just, dreamy, long winded and impressionistic masses of sound collages that come in and out of the picture with the ease of ghosts and ideas.

tl;dr - if you like it you like it and that's the appeal; if you don't like it then explaining it won't make a difference

Why are some listed incorrectly as song - artist?
>>
>>74494958
Well, it kinda depends on what you're listening to in the genre. With most purely industrial music it's appeal is similar to electronic music's in general in terms of interplay between a variety of timbre to develop a certain type of atmosphere. I am not those guys, but I feel that legit industrial and its more direct offshoots (dark ambient, power electronics, etc. not ebm, industrial rock/metal, etc.) do the absolute best job at offering darker/or more surreal atmospheric music created through manipulations of a large variety of timbre that also often tends to have a visceral, abrasive feel to it as well. Some of them have a noise element as well which nets a very dark take on a textural experience as well.
>>
>>74495073
>explaining it won't make a difference
You might be surprised but it truly does.
I've grown into quite a lot of artists purely by listening to people describing what they like in them. An outsider experience can often help understanding art.

Europe and it's people

They think they are above everyone because they are so progressive and tolerant, but the reality is that they're destroying themselves with such degenerate behaviour. It's not a personal issue, it's just embarrassing for the rest of us Europeans.

Does anyone have the pics of when we came up for ideas for a black metal TV show?

Point out where I "stood for them". I literally only pointed out that either the screenplay and/or actors fucked it up or the representative himself misinterpreted the video, and that it doesn't feature cuckoldry. This is factual.
>Europe and it's people
Says who? You? And why?
>They
You accused me of arrogance. I don't care what "they" or "you" think. How was I being arrogant? By correcting you? Forgive me for pointing out your mistakes then.

This is as vague as arguments get. Nice slippery slope anyway. I mean seesaws are fun as fuck

Something tells me most europeans won't consider you to be in some sort of "us" group.
