Every young boy who's picked up the guitar since 1997 has learned to tap. It's not "showing off". It's a way of playing the instrument. And in this case it's a way of providing texture for some really fantastic song writing. Also if you listen, it's pretty clear that a lot of the guitars are chopped and reconstituted by careful MIDI composing. It sounds like if an electronic musician wanted to make a mathrock album and is way more interesting than any mathrock I've heard in years IMO.
