Is sending demos to indie labels a big waste of time? If not is there a best way to do?
SoundCloud my dude. Or perhaps Bandcamp? Or just put those fire tracks on Dailymotion for people to listen to.
Most labels aren't even accepting demos nowadays. If they want you, they'd come to you.

yes but how will they know if they want me or not if they haven't heard my music yet?
Which labels? Also you could find out contact info of random people in the label and send it to them, no clue if this is a good idea.
the best way to get signed these days is to be on soundcloud/bandcamp and get a following there and the labels will come to you

labels like lefse, mexican summer, etc.

No. You have to draw a crowd on your own. Labels want to be successful and if they see someone with potential, they'll be more willing to sign than if they just got some tape by someone who they don't know.

Grimes got rejected like fifty times from Gorilla vs Bear
How do you get cassettes stocked in local stores?

A lot of them will take your stuff on commission if you have the inventory
