Does obscurity make music better?
Obscurity has a negligible effect on the quality of a piece of music.
Not at all.
I know plenty of shitty obscure alt-rock albums and other obscure albums that are just bad. Being obscure does nothing to make me like them more or less, to me its just the same as any other album.
If people like music just because it is obscure they are playing themselves

maybe
is a piece of music is massively popular, it can only be "mediocre good" and nothing else
if a piece of music is obscure, in most cases it is crap, in some cases it's decent but most importantly, only it can be genuinely transcendental, because it will without exceptions make it incomprehensible to the plebeian masses

You can make field recordings of a truck-stop restroom and bury it in a time capsule for 5,000 years but when they dig it up it'll still be field recordings of a truck-stop restroom.
No, but it does make it easier to determine if something is good since you don't have any expectations going into it

not better, but in the obscurity there are a lot of awesome albums.

Does taking a thousand dicks make a woman more desirable?
No, because popularity is decided after an album's release, not before.

countless artists have no chance to become popular, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the music.
Do you mean obscure for /mu/ (not on the essentials) or actual obscure (not even on RYM or last.fm)?
No, obscurity is irrelevant, but trying hard to make an album get into mainstream popularity by not breaking any conventional rules, pandering and being a label's dog does.
That's why instead of following XXL freshman i follow the rappers who deny being on it, like Bones.

That's my point. That its not quality that determines popularity because the two exist independently. An album could be great and get very popular or it could be shit and get very popular.
i think op was talking about the residents and nobody caught on
I see it like this: very good music is often obscure, but just because an album is obscure does not automatically make it good music.
Example: Jimmy's soundcloud mixtape is obscure, but shit. In contrast, a great album by someone like Squarepusher will stay obscure because it's not able to enter the mainstream, because it appeals to a certain audience rather than the group collective
