What does /mu/ think about Phil Collins?

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

I'm not a fan of his solo work, but his stuff with Genesis is quite good, both as drummer and lead singer.

Meh

Peter Gabriel's discogrpahy is pseudo-intellectual, artsy, pretentious stuff that's more about the aesthetic than anything else, all about impressing the rest, especially his former peers. Phil Collins however always had his passion and his own fans in mind, you can hear in every single one of his tracks how passionate and straightforward he is, he's a perfectionist that goes straight to the point, no artsy bullshit required. He's legit. Genuine.
>>
i enjoy his work with brian eno
>>
>>74465937
A better singer than Gabriel.
>>
Peter Gabriel wrote Sledghammer and will therefore always be better than Phil Collins. That said both iterations of Genesis made good shit

phil collins wrote sussudio. your move.

not him but prince wrote 1999
>>
>>74467305
So, sussudio just sounds like 1999 by Prince you can tell Phil stole it
>>
In the Air Tonight is one of the best pop songs of all time
>>
Do you know that song by Phil Collins, In the Air of the Night, about that guy who could have saved that other guy from drownin', but he didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a show he found him? That's kinda how this is.
>>
>>74465937
Misunderstood guy.
His drumming in brand x is fantastic, and his work in genesis is great up until abacab or so.
He really doesn't deserve all the hate he gets, i think anyone would take the opportunities that they were handed in the early 80s
>>
there's a theory in the air tonight was about a guy who abused kids, who phil knew when he was a kid
you can read it that way

His drumming is very complex prior to Abacab, and he can switch time signatures on a dime. The rest of his catalogue with Genesis is... well, just normal drumming.

With that said, he gets a lot of mileage out of his drum fills and little tricks. Say what you want, but he's the only drummer that people "hum" (as in In the Air Tonight). I'd say he was probably the most innovative pop drummer possibly ever. WIthin the context of simple music he is on par with The Police.
>>
>>74465965
Greedy why? Is it something to do with Genesis.
>>
>>74467567
That drum beat at the start of Second Home by The Sea is simple yet groovy as fuck.

He seems like a nice guy, could easily have a drink with him.

Gabriel is the kind of person who would judge you based on what drink you bought.

>Collins received acerbic comments in the press following reports about his retirement in 2011. He was dubbed "the most hated man in rock" by The Daily Telegraph,[11] and by FHM as "the pop star that nobody likes".[11] Rolling Stone journalist John Dioso acknowledged "the incredible, overwhelming popularity" Collins and Genesis achieved, but said that he had become "a negative figure in the music world" and that the reaction to his legacy was strongly unfavourable.[177]

>Collins concedes his status as a figure of contempt for many people and has said that he believes this is a consequence of his music being overplayed.[11][186] In 2011 he said: "The fact that people got so sick of me wasn't really my fault … It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me. I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that!"[11][192] He described criticism of his physical appearance over the years as "a cheap shot",[180] but has acknowledged the "very vocal element" of Genesis fans who believe that the group sold out under his tenure as lead singer.[193]

>Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher criticised Collins on multiple occasions,[186][187] including the comment: "Just because you sell lots of records, it doesn't mean to say you're any good. Look at Phil Collins."[188] Collins said he has "at times, been very down" about Noel Gallagher's comments.[11] Gallagher's brother, Oasis singer Liam, also recalled the "boring" Collins's chart dominance in the 1980s and stated that, by the 1990s, it was "time for some real lads to get up there and take charge".[189]

>However, in 2010 Collins alluded to feelings of depression and low self-esteem in recent years, claiming in an interview that he had contemplated suicide, but he resisted for the sake of his children.[225]

when will the hacks and bullies of the music industry stop picking on phil? he's a good bloke with some great music to his name.

Oh yeah forgot to say that on the otherhand Phil Collins did a fantastic song with Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind, and Fire which is fantastic and I never here anyone mention it

The fact that Brand X never gets mentioned is a criminal shame. Some unreal musicianship in that band over the years.

I think people maybe had enough of him after he did that homeless single. Similar effect as U2 getting all preachy. It can alienate the general public.

False. Hackett was completely dispensable. His presence literally mattered less than Gabriel, and Gabriel just made the lyrics shittier.
>>
>>74471403
Mike couldn't cover well for his guitar skills, but Duke was an excellent album regardless. Invisible Touch and the first half of self titled were also pretty good albums.
>>
I'm perfectly fine with his work in Genesis, but I've never been able to like his solo pop work.

Guess it was sheer coincidence that Collin's voice sounds nearly identical to Gabriel's, and that was what allowed Genesis to survive after the Lamb. Trick of the Tail is a fine album, so I cannot possibly complain about the post-Gabriel era of the band, although I definitely prefer the band with Gabriel.
>>
>>74467886
I think people couldn't stand seeing a relatively normal-looking dude having massive fame. It made them jealous, but I also think that was a factor in his popularity.
