Hello /mu/.
I've recently started to listen more and more to Opeth, both their old and new songs and I just can't get enough, these are real fucking musicians.
However, i've found it to be hard to find bands resembling the same sound that is their old progressive rock/death/black-metal/jazz fusion.
Care to help a metalhead out?
This might be one of the best songs i've heard in my life and considered by me to be the best Opeth song there is.

>progressive rock/death/black-metal/jazz fusion.
They're neither black metal, neither jazz fusion in the slightest.
listen to Leprous for some more proge
listen to some og prog like soft machine or camel or can before you bother with opeth's prog revival wank

Might not be it overall, but some songs definitely have both black metal and jazz influences.
Leprous was actually pretty good, more modern sounding. Thanks!

Soft Machine and Camel are more like the new Opeth, prog-rock that is.
What im looking for is bands sounding more like the old Opeth, Prog-rock/Death metal.
Camel and Soft Machine are great bands though!

Leprous actually reminded me of Port Noir, a newer Swedish band:

Have you listened to Porcupine Tree
Opeth are definitely hella unique, but there are some great bands out there that do a similar approach to their music.
Porcupine Tree immediately pops to mind for me, especially their later albums as Steven Wilson began to work with Opeth (Blackwater Park and Damnation/Deliverance were produced by him). Fear of A Blank Planet and Deadwing are especially good later PT albums since they're more prog-metal than prog-rock.

Another one I recommend is Ne Obliviscaris, Aussie band with riffs galore and long-ass songs just like Opeth. Citadel is unbelievably good and they've got a new album coming out this year I think.

Some of these were pretty good, will add to my list!

Yeah I already have Porcupine Tree in my list, they are pretty good!
Ne Obliviscaris was not really my cup of tea.

Both these were pretty damn great!
Leprous is a good recommend, but pls do yourself a favor and get familiar with Enslaved.
I've been a long term Opeth fan since discovering them in high school about 5 years ago, but recently and for the last few years have adored the songs that Enslaved have written, I started an "albums that have aged well" thread posting Vertebrae as an album that has aged well since 2008. check out songs like, Clouds, New Dawn and Vertebrae. also check out albums such as "Ruun"
