I just started listening to The Cure (Disintegration) and I really enjoy the moodier stuff on most of the album. Favorite tracks are the title track, Love Song, and Fascination Street, with Same Deep Water as You and Homesick close behind that. I love the percussion and really just the whole sound of the album, with all those synthy bits and big reverb tails to everything on those looong melodic intros.
I don't really enjoy the happier-sounding songs on the album (Pictures of You, Plainsong, etc). Usually these are the more praised tracks on the album, so most places I find online suggesting music like that on Disintegration go for that feeling instead. Getting into this genre I was expecting mostly everything to have the kind of gloomy-yet-beautiful vibe that the tracks I listed as my favorites have, but I find that a lot of it just falls somewhere in between. Hoping I'll have better luck here.
So I'm requesting music that falls into that category. Moody, bittersweet, emotional themes over big atmospheres with driving basslines and rhythms.... NOT Pictures of You

The Cure's Pornography maybe? It may not be 100% what you are looking for but you can give it a listen

It's been awhile since I last heard it so I can't really remember the "happy" to sad ratio but it's p moody at least. Vocalist almost sounds like Robert Smith too.

check out sisters of mercy and darkwave type music.
Go listen to Faith and Pornography, maybe Seventeen Seconds and Bloodflowers at a stretch but the former is a bit undercooked while the latter might veer too hard into Plainsong-esque nostalgic melancholy for your tastes. Kinda find it odd that you consider Plainsong too happy then list Lovesong as a favorite when it's the happiest song on the record but okay.
