If Brian Wilson had been given free reign to do whatever he wanted, music would've ended as we know it because he would've achieved such transcended greatness that there would be no point in continuing. Mike Love saw this, so for the good of humanity he acted as the perfect counterweight, dragging down the Beach Boys so dramatically and being so utterly talentless that humanity will be able to continue making music for the rest of its existence.

Mike Love didn't appreciate Brian Wilson's talent and would essentially bully him in order to "stick to the formula." He didn't like any of Pet Sounds or Smile but reluctantly recorded vocals for it after lyrics were changed.

Basically he thinks he has an equal contribution to The Beach Boys as Brian does.
