Sorry Ma is a wonderful album. This is just a "starter set." desu I felt like including the Replacements and Husker Du might be overdoing it, plus that album is so garage-y and Stones-influenced that I wasn't totally sure it was the best representation of punk
I feel that crust, powerviolence, and grindcore really perfected the genre thus see no reason to listen to earlier stuff anymore.

They certainly crystallized a lot of the appeal and brought the intensity to the fore. I still like a lot of early art punk and anarcho stuff, but I can understand your opinion (as you can see, I like crust a lot), even though I don't share it. I've never gotten that into grindcore, though I do love Carcass' Reek of Putrefaction - it's disorienting, mind-bending, and almost psychedelic. They achieved with rudimentary musicianship what most extreme metal bands could only dream of

Perhaps you have a taste for grind that's closer to metal? Ever check out Gridlink's Longhena? Or Nuclear Death's Bride Of Insect which is raw murky deathgrind akin to Reek?

You might be right. I haven't tried either of those, I'll check them out.
