Man, I've tried so hard to find stuff that captures the same feel as this, but nothing quite hits right. Other good Psych stuff from that time you could check out though:
Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
Nick Nicely's stuff. He had one really good song in particular, Hilly Fields. He has a comp called Psychotropia or something that you could check out

Also check out the Dukes of the Stratosphear albums if you haven't
Teardrop Explodes and Julian Cope have a few stuff that sounds a little like it as well

Dukes is XTC btw. Skylarking was released between their EP and album, so it's very much in the same mindset as those releases.

yeah I was reading that and one of their riffs on the ep was really similar to one on skylarking imo

The various tracklistings and reissues make my head spin. Is there a "definitive" or "best" version?

Get the "corrected polarity" version
The first release had Dear God taken off it for lack of space on the record for the entire album as intended
The American release replaced Mermaid Smiled (I think) with it
The first expanded CD reissue put Dear God at the end, which wasn't wear it was supposed to be
The "corrected polarity" edition was the album in the order that it was supposed to be in, plus they fixed a fault in mastering of the album, so it sounds better
