The guitars in "guitar music" are secondary. The aesthetic in rock comes from the musical ideas, not the timbre of the instruments. It's why you could easily recognize Come As You Are if someone was playing it on the piano (as opposed to Death Grips) -- because it's a musical idea that exists beyond just the distorted guitars or loud drums.
