how come shoegaze is not a real genre?
It *was* a genre for a time, but nowadays it's signature sound has blended into the fabric of alternative rock music as a whole.
No one really bats an eye anymore when a band heavily incorporates guitar fuzz into their sound, and rarely do those bands get labeled as shoegaze anymore.
This is what happens to most microgenres, their respective niches eventually stagnate (because the genre has nowhere to go) and get swallowed up by other genres until the microgenre is gone. Witch house and chillwave are great examples, eventually becoming a defining layer in the sound of some other band that might not even have heard of the original microgenre.
Because it's shit
