started out making pretty good post-punk similiar with jd but poppier. then kept moving more and more towards pop rock.

1980-1983 post punk college favorites
1984-1987 - start of lanois/eno era; break into mainstream and become biggest band in world
1988 - choke on own hubris, critical backlash
1991-1993 - re-invent sound and re-establish relevance
1995-1997 - commercial decline
2000 - recover status as world's biggest rock band; voice of post 9/11 optimism
2004 - elder statesmen / boring old fart era

from about '87 to the present day they have been consistently one of the biggest live draws in the world.
