that article doesn't understand anything about prog i have more of an issue with that than the racial hook they hung it on

That's actually kinda tough. Prog has Pink Floyd and Yes who have a ton of appeal around the world. Classical might not have a lot of blacks/latinos, but a ton of peeps with Asian country origins and hell a couple South American countries as well.

It's by an enormous margin the whole "alt rock/post punk/indie rock" set of genres because their approach to their subject matter and aesthetic is very much middle class white person oriented. The only band with worldwide appeal is perhaps Nirvana in this realm of music. If you got a band like say...The Smiths or Brand New playing what is simplistic kinda boring sounding music about muh suburban white boy problems, the only target audience being hit is like the US/EU.

While it's true that there are a few members here and there in this kinda music that are far from white (e.g. Kim Thayil from Soundgarden), the music itself still caters to that one particular audience.
