The idea of not selling out and authenticity was really big in the 90's
Not like today were ever shit hipster band sells out by putting their music in ipod and car commercials.
Pearl jam was actually bigger than nirvana, sold more records.
It was a weird moment when you think about it, these bands that hated the mainstream, fame, became the biggest rock stars in the world.
A dark spirit hangs over the grunge people.
Think about it, there are rock guys from the 50's still walking around, fucking chuck berry only died like a year ago.

You have to remember all of these guys came from the DIY punk and alternative rock scene. They were like hipsters with more integrity. It was the 80s. Their favorite bands were Black Flag, The Melvins, Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. Almost all of them found their start on a small label that circulated specifically to their own niche. They built a culture on being everything different from what was on MTV, opposed to being an overproduced market product that plebians with no imagination flung themselves into.

Staley and Cobain were broken men long before their bands exploded in popularity, and said popularity only added further fuel to the fire in terms of their self-destructive tendencies. Their sordid, dysfunctional personal lives couldn't have helped either.
Soundgarden's collapse was pretty typical. Unexpected fame followed by egos growing increasingly inflated followed by total exhaustion and a failure to cope with commercial pressures followed by a breakup.
I wouldn't say Pearl Jam fucked up. If anything they're the only major band of the moment to come out of the whole thing relatively unscathed, in large part thanks to distancing themselves from the typical ambitions that come with rockstardom.

The self-mythologizing fatalism of the time and the confusion and conflict that comes with deciding whether you, being looked upon by millions of people as a defining voice of your era, should live up to your public myth or cling onto your personal integrity instead certainly added further fuel to the fire when it came to bands like Nirvana and AIC.

They all realized at varying points that they weren't as good as early Dinosaur Jr. (or early Butthole Surfers in Kurt's case), so their careers were pretty much a wash.

Another point to raise about Layne is that he was actually clean for a while after the Dirt album, and then the leg injury happened. He was off and on again for a bit I believe during that tour, then his girlfriend died and he went on a nonstop binge.
