Tips on playing the alto quietly? My sound is improving when I put a lot of air into the instrument but when I play quietly using little air I have this static noise of breathe over all of my notes especially the higher ones.
Any advice to minimize this because I think it makes me sound pretty terrible.
Get lessons, self taught musicians are extremely distinguishable in a bad way. They stand out like a sore thumb
tenor > alto, ya sucker!

This.
Ironically saying this coming from a guy who owns a alto just to dick around on it.

Well I had lessons all throughout childhood in it (band class everyday for at least 8 years) but I always viewed it as a class and a chore till I began to listen to a lot of jazz in the past five years.
I really want to learn to get better at it and I have a great base but I'm very rusty and my sax is pretty old and decrepit.
I have considered taking lessons a lot recently because I don't feel like my self teaching is getting anywhere besides learning some shitty pop songs and easy jazz chords.

always take lessons, you don't want to bad habits. Bad habits are more difficult to correct, than it is to learn good habits from scratch
