I can never understand people that do this. I live in a big city and was always taught to never listen to music in public (at most with only one earbud) because it blocks too much noise and you need to be aware of your surroundings all the time.

But no, it's not autistic. I think it's stupid however.

No, just unnecessary. And it can look stupid if you are wearing big headphones. IEMs are more portable, practical, and cheaper for public use. But I think headphones are perfectly fine in the library or during long commutes/travel.
