Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?? I've been trying for hours just to be able to record. I mean I get it, it's free software so I shouldn't complain, but this is just absurd.
I've tried hooking up a keyboard, a microphone, and an amp and none of them work.
I've tried to make sure the system settings match the audacity settings
I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I'm even close to getting it to work. Any advice or things to try?
Need more details. What are you using? audio interface? What sound device are you trying to open in this screenshot?

Am I stupid or is Audacity just total shit?
Change the sample rate on the bottom right to 44100hz. Also maybe go into mac system settings and make sure your line in input is selected. Audacity IS pretty shitty btw

Bottom left, my bad.
Try changing audio host

It's a mac, so the only audio host is core audio, I believe.
What you're doing wrong is using a Mac in the first place.

Try to go through all the sound settings and look for any other recording device. Also just restart your mac once just in case.
