OP here, I'd guess "awful" in the archaic sense, as in awe-inspiring. Would fall in line with all her nature lyricism. Also, I chose this passage less for semantic meaning and more for deft navigation of phonetic devices.

if you actually read this you'd realize the rhyme, assonance, and consonance are far too dense for a thesaurus-dependent gal to have accomplished. Newsom does not at all rely on large words in lieu of talent, she just uses them.
