read poetry, I would say more than prose cause it's closer to lyrics. Also, study lyricists you admire, try writing in their style until you can find your own voice

Think about what you're writing it for. Is it a coping mechanism? Is it to make people out there feel they're not alone in a situation or feeling? Be honest to yourself.

Someone is bound to have the same feelings as you and go "wow, I wanted to put my feelings to words but this person did, I thought no one felt like me". There's your connection to your listeners.

Watch Inside Llewyn Davis. The trick with songwriting is not the subject matter, nor intellectual prowess; but the ability to connect with other people.
