I assume you’re talking about albums post Scary Monsters. He had just signed a massive deal with EMI and I guess he thought he should pander to the mainstream audience, he regrets it though, called it his Phil Collins years, he liked Let’s Dance and some songs off Tonight like Loving The Alien and Absolute Beginners though, and wished he had produced some differently, the Reality tour version of Loving the alien is great and he says it’s probably the way it should’ve been done.
He had a sudden realisation when he looked at his audience and thought these people look like they’re at a Phil Collins gig
I think by his own admission he tried to cash in with his elevated popularity from Let's Dance and ended up losing touch with his writing process
