That's probably because Henry Cow hits every aspect of this type of music at once. KC/Yes style intricate playing, Magic Band style erratic rhythms, a weird surface aesthetic like Residents or Magma, and unlike all of them has legitimately unconventional harmonic progressions as well. They are the complete package, but because they are the complete package they are arguably one of the harder bands to fully digest for new listeners.
I've been going through a prog phase lately. Lots of Yes and King Crimson. Trying to branch out into early Genesis and ELP, but it's slow going. Still need to get a copy of KC's Red. Share link? Other prog recs?
