Why did it fail?
Because its against everything tyler stands for nowadays
Did it? It launched the careers of 3 musicians who still have mainstream/underground success. That's better than most rap groups do.

Because marketing to teenagers is always temporary. The current audience ages and tries to distance themselves from things they used to like in a doomed attempt to convince themselves they've magically become a new adult version of their past self and the next prospective audience wants to find their own thing instead of just copying the people a few years older than them. Shit happens literally every couple years.
They haven't ya dingus

Now that music subcultures have been displaced by politics and gender-based subcultures the staying power of shitty buzzbands is way shorter. The cycle will come back around at some point and some more Slipknots will outlast their allotted meme-time but we are in a good age of that shit dying off quick now.
