It's the first of August.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

unhalfbricking is incredible, whoa

Goldie - Timeless (1995)
>atmospheric drum and bass

Goldie has undeniable production chops, that's for sure. That doesn't mean his album has to be nearly two hours, though. The title track is a monolithic, fittingly timeless piece of drum and bass, melding the ethereal and the banging with ease. The 21 minutes blow right buy, something I can't say about the 90 minutes that make up the rest of the album. It's all well-done and well-produced, which means little if most tracks serve as slightly different attempts at doing the same exact song. Ethereal, new-agey humming; soul-esque vocals; light breaks here and there. Rinse and repeat, and you get Timeless.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - E. 1999 Eternal (1995)
>gangsta rap

Listening to this, I felt exactly how I feel about Drake. When they try and be super tough and gangsta, they sound ridiculously corny (seriously, hearing those melodic triplet flows sing about shooting people is hilarious). On the other hand, their pop stuff is sublime. Seriously, "Tha Crossroads" is a pretty damn incredible pop tune, as is the comparatively pretty poppy "1st of tha Month". Not coincidentally, these two tracks also happen to be singles. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are definitely a pretty great songs act, while their albums as a whole leave quite a bit desired. I guess I should hate them out of memphis rap purity, but whatever.

2.5

The Residents - Commercial Album (1980)
>art pop, satire, minimal synth

I might be missing the point of this given that I didn't listen to each song three times in a row like the band suggests, not having 120 minutes to spare. So, in my diminished capability to talk about this, it's definitely weaker both from a musical and a satirical standpoint than a lot of the Residents' other stuff. Their attempt to deconstruct advertising jingles ends up more like a collection of 40 half-baked pop-ish tunes. There's a certain brilliance to how these purposefully soulless songs are constructed, this brilliance easily overshadowed by the fragmented style. There are incredible moments of brilliance, like the weird, deconstructed march drumming that appears on quite a few tracks, and the absolutely amazing "The Coming of the Crow", which often outweigh the negatives.

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking (1969)
>british folk rock

I should kick myself for not being the biggest fan of Liege & Lief, because this is doing things to me I didn't know a british folk rock album could do. I've never really cared for the genre, stemming from my general distaste towards traditional british music in general, but this completel decimates every preconceived notion I had regarding the genre. It's intense during the longer compositions, impressively jaunty during the shorter, poppier tracks, and everything is bolstered by heartrending performances by Sandy Denny. Listen to this.

The Beatnigs - The Beatnigs (1988)
>industrial hip hop, political hip hop, conscious hip hop

Mindblowing, anachronistic beats, really middling vocals. The vocals are pretty funny at times, especially on the intro, but none of the rappers have any flow or power at all, allowing the production to run circles around them. How ahead of its time the production is aside, it really hits hard, the drums are great but what's more impressive is the weird industrial funk noise going on over them. Sadly, the weirdly goofy vocals hurt the album as a whole, as do the more funk rock-esque tracks.

rip
Infiniment is probably a thorough introduction to Brel but probably not the best for starters, especially if you don't speak French. Maybe one of his more popular albums would've been better but well.
Brassens and Ferré will probably leave you the same. Although they're pretty different: Brassens is pretty austere, guy with a guitar singing songs accompanied by a bass whereas Ferré is very theatrical with big arrangements and feels more like a poet than a songwriter. Also most of his stuff isn't translated I think, as opposed to Brel and Brassens. But yeah, the lyricism is a big attraction toward these artists though not the only thing that draws people to them.

Maybe because I'd just rewatched snatch but all I can see when I see the cover now
Yeah my french is pisspoor, I would alternately read translated lyrics but had trouble keeping that up. He has a great voice and the backing band was excellent, it just definitely feels very lyrically focused. Will probably revisit in a year or two when I've brushed up on my french.
Finished Some Combinations of Fingers and Passions as well; I felt that I would have enjoyed seeing it performed in full live more than listening to it. Live it would almost feel like a comedy show bringin in so many different melodies and opposing them, recorded like it was it felt sterile and technical wankery
>>
>>74279992
Eh, I find it pretty interesting though I usually go through individual tracks more often than through the whole record, a whole hour of solo experimental piano like that can be tiring. And his other stuff with other musicians I don't find as interesting because it's progressive stuff.

I think it was written during the time Letov and Kuzmin were in the group Spinki Menta, but when they split they ended up re-purposing it for their own particular sound.

Since you'll be in Ukraine, make sure to check out some of the records from "Novaya Scena", their mostly forgotten music scene.

>ricebean recs Hear Hums - Opens

pure Here Comes The Indian/Feels worship, though as you'd expect not near as good as those (((((((masterpieces))))))). i love hearing bands anco has so clearly influenced it makes me feel nice. this isn't bad or anything and there are some nice sounds n stuff but its a very distractingly watered down version of that stuff.
5/10

>transgod recs Unexpect - In A Flesh Aquarium

i can definitely see why you recommended this one. enjoyable, although i do enjoy this sort of thing more outside of the context of the metal-ness. it is very admirable how well they match tim smith at utter insanity yet still being digestible although i think its missing tim's ability to make that complex insanity the catchiest and most memorable thing you'll ever hear. this one is more of a mash of sounds that lead into more mash. although it's a very nice sounding mash in the end. will listen to this one some more in the future, its definitely something that needs continued digesting.

>borzoi recs YMO - Naughty Boys

a bit of a deceiving title, you might expect something sexy or hip, but this is more of YMO's classic sound. further continuing into their gradual video game music-y influence it would fit well with the opening or closing cinematic of an old snes or ps1 jrpg, where the characters are not just happy, but content, which to me is the greatest feeling you can have and staring out into the sea from the green grassy mountain on the shore. it's a very particular emotional sound found only in japanese music from around the time of this album's release and something i connect to really well. momentarily content but in the very back of your mind a flat longing for another truly fulfilling moment like the ones you had when you were a kid. anything that makes me feel like that is special in some way.
8/10

blapp recs Huntsville - For The Middle Class

really nice droney kraut repetition primitivism improv. QUITE jim o'rourkey and i would recommend it to any fan of his. when the banjo and upright bass and jazzy drums and glitching guitar noise and i think tabla come together on Add A Key of Humanity it makes one of the most hypnotic grooves ive heard in a long time. this one makes me want to listen to more of this kind of music again, it's been a while since i was really into it. quality rec blapper.

btw my reviews are probably shitty because i type them as random thoughts while im listening and dont re read them after i'm done. i'd like to try and write more substantial things in the future although i'm not sure how exactly i'd like to talk about the music. i find that ones where the reviwer just talks about what happens in the songs are pretty boring and dime a dozen, but the more abstract feeling i have while hearing something that makes me experience them are very difficult to put into words for me.

RIP to my last French chart from July! Italian chart incoming…

>GRM/Xenakis • Electro-Acoustic Music
3.5
"Bohor" (1962) on the A-side is pure otherworldly Industrial Harsh Drone from 1971. White noise-core.
The B-side sounds more organic: "Concret P-H II" and "Diamorphoses II" are calmer, like some Ambient White Noise, but "Orient-Occident III" is a bit more chaotic (w/ gamelans).

>Melmoth • La devanture des ivresses
2.5
LMAO: the guy can't sing and his lyrics are awful…

>Les Maledictus Sound • s/t
2.5
This goofy Psych Rock sounds like it was made by someone who has no idea what Psych Rock actually is: it's closer to Library Music territory than actual Rock.

>Charles Aznavour • Entre deux rêves
4.0
It opens with one of the famous Aznavour song "Emmenez-moi", then 11 more great songs (ie. the epic "Yerushalaim") follows, with lush symphonic arrangements. Very solid LP.

>Françoise Hardy • Le premier bonheur du jour
3.0
Qt & twee.

>Jean-Jacques Perrey • Musique électronique du cosmos
3.5
Goofy melodies on early synths: sounds like television jingles for early 70's TV shows for children.

>Boulez/Schoenberg/Varèse • Hyperprisme; Octandres; Intégrales / Suite Op. 29
3.5
Great short pieces (from 1923-1925) by Varèse: no (obvious) melodies, aggressive percussions, very colorful, nonetheless dramatic and with a strong narration. The Schoenberg suite is more melodic; I think a wider range of instruments is used in a more perplexing composition. It's overall strident but playful.

>Serge Gainsbourg • Du chant à la une !…
1.5
"Le Poinçonneur des Lilas" is a classic; the rest is waaaaay too dated.

>André Popp • Delirium in Hi-Fi

It could work as a nice colorful movie soundtrack (ie.Jacques Tati movies) or Warner Brs move cartoons, but as itself, it's painfully dated and too wacky.

Listened through the first four Elliott Smith albums, quite interesting how he seems to improve on every release, XO is brilliant. Going to give more concise insight onto them in due time. Will try Led Zeppelin in a day or so, don't really know what to expect - I remember back in days of secondary school one of my friends who was far more into music (dad-rock, though given that I was listening to dubstep at the time it was pretty hardcore) used to like Led Zeppelin and me and my friend used to call it Zep Leppelin and they seemed highly disgruntled. Any stories you guys have of stuff of people being perturbed on the subject of music?

A single aritst, even if it's very, very popular, won't fuck up your score. That's why the log is there. To normalize things.

In which case it means someone (you) has listened to it, therefore log(1)=0 :)

>>74289923
>what's wrong with popularity
Nothing. It's only bad when you listen to popular stuff almost exclusively because you don't give obscure music a chance.

>tfw one of your RYM corrections took almost a year and it only got accepted because you messaged a mod about it

>>74290986

Correct, but only if you are being sincere with your top 10.
listening to good music => having good taste
>>
>>74290986
but whether you have "good taste" or not is a different discussion from whether you happen to listen to "good music" altogether, if you don't simply want it to mean "hey we like the same things that's nice"
obviously i don't give a fuck if you have the most obscure favorites in the room but avant argues that elitism and board quality are positively correlated and he's done it a lot of times before so that's where he's coming from

because he thinks a defunct cultural movement that peaked in 2012 (which could describe me in part, though would in turn describe him as well as we agree on a lot of music) is a massic threat to society and music and uses some of the most popular /acclaimed artists of the last 50 years to describe it. 90% of artists on there hold a spot in the Rolling Stone 500 and most have at least o

plus he refuses to accept that Williamsburg-types/liberal art students (probably what you'd refer to as a hipster? idk) love Hounds of Love/Kate Bush just as much as he does, and it's fun to see a 50 year old man dance around the subject and resort to personal insults instead of acknowledging the same people dig one of his favorite albums as much as they do anything else on there.

Most hipsters have morphed into neoliberal poptimists in 2017 anyways. Most just like Beyonce/Lana Del Ray and tweet gifs of black women now.

TOURNEY UPDATE
post feelist made a free/avant folk mix. pretty good, loads of different cultures represented! I liked the kazumi tokata finale (is that who it is? i've only heard gleaming crayon but it must be him) and the Diane Cluck tracks best I think.
however
the album art was supposed to be a painting.
still, good cover and good mix. thanks pal!!!!

s made a similar mix, which featured longer songs, so it was less varied than feelists, but not to any detriment. Pelt's opening raga was a good mood set. Big Blood & the Bleedin Heart's "graceless lady" is amazing and one of the best songs of the tourney. I like the painting cover, too! great work s, thank you!!!!!

As long as it's not the cookie cutter snoozefest that a lot of atmoblack records are, that's a step up. I like early burzum and urfaust because it's pretty heavy and has some great vocals. Also summoning because dragons and synths and stuff and it's cool as fuck.
>Because I like pic related even when I know it's a reverb-soaked spaceambient fest
Must've heard that like three years ago. I don't really remember much from it but as far as I know it was a lot of saceambient as you say, and not really much black metal.

>a lot of saceambient as you say, and not really much black metal.
Yeah, most of the metal is muffled beneath electronics. I dig that sound, but i'm pretty sure some people would hate me for that opinion. gotta give black metal more attention eventually, ngl when I say Ghost was what got me interested in giving metal a chance a year ago
>>
why was such a good album cover wasted on such a piss poor album

I like the ritual music compilation from Urfaust because of the lack of ambient tracks and because it takes tracks from other releases and turns them up hard.
>man, haven't seen anyone discuss dungeon synth here ever.
Summoning isn't really dungeon synth. Sure they use synths and stuff but aside from intros and whatnot they're incorporated into black metal, as opposed to a standalone ambient album. I haven't heard much dungeon synth, mostly Varg stuff and I haven't liked it to be honest.
>gotta give black metal more attention eventually
Start with the classics I guess. Bathory, Darkthrone, Emperor. Or if you already have some favorites I can try and rec you.

Contemporary Darkwave? I don't know, but Palmer and Ka-Spel's voices make a chilling pair; the cogent but alluring tones in Palmer's aged voice, or Ka-Spel's higher cockney accent complement each other over strings and plain synths. Quite happy I wishlisted this album on a whim.

speaking of time machines, im going to relisten and see if it makes my head hurt again
7

>Nik Bartsh Ronin - Holon
(-■_■)
7

>Vijay Iyer Trio - Historicity
I don't know why I like this guy's piano jazz so much, but it's like eating warm bread. His playing is dizzying, but the atmosphere is comfy.
7

>Denis Mpunga & Paul K. - Criola
Imagine Africa in 100 years without humanity blowing anything up. This would be the music of its hidden clubs, snug between skyscrapers.
7

>Seirom - 1973
More ambient than metal. Length isn't quite justified, but this is exactly the kind of sound I would want to bathe in. Choirs, celestial thrashing,
7

>Crotaion Amor - Love Means Taking Action
Was conflicted, but yeah, this isn't as tangible as The World. Ignore the 7 on the chart, it's a 6.
6

>I am a Lake of Burning Orchids - Summer in My Veins
There's some really sparkly, compressed choruses in here. Yells like Prurient, bit-crushed bleeps. I'm alright with happy Noise music, but this was just ok.
6

>David Sylvian - Alchemy
More like a full album of semi-archaic tribal ambience + outdated sounding instrumentation. Still quite charming, but I don't expect anyone here to really enjoy it.

>Kilo Kish - Reflections in Real Time
Reminiscent of PC Music. Kilo Kish's voice is vageuly childlike, and with spacey production amongst trap and R&B (and a broadway opener!), as well as small skits, the humor actually got me to smile.
6

>Phew - Light Sleep
Japanese techno one moment, industrial with mic-peaking vocals the next. I wonder how the spoken Japanese would come off to a native speaker (pretentious? direct?). Unabashedly off-putting.
6

>Peter Broderick - Float
What you'd expect from the album art, pianos and country whispers.
5

>Kayo Dot - Coffins On Io
this is alt rock.
5

>Young Marco - Biology
Happy-ish House. Actually somewhat pleasing.
5

>Arthur Russell - Another Thought
Yeah fuck me up for not liking this. Maybe it was just too obvious that this was a collection rather than an album, and his style of singing and sparse backgrounnd doesn't work for me as something over several tracks. Even when he incorporates more sounds like on In The Light of The Miracle or My Tiger, My Timing, it just doesn't click for me and sounds really dated. the songwriting is nice but this album somehow seems too scattershot (including lyric delivery, not their content).
4

>Salem - King Knight
The first track already fucks up using Noel like that. The trap beats bring a level of tackiness to what could have potentially been some powerful moments (Redlights is alright), but it doesn't matter because the whole album seems to dwell in the same claustrophobic synth saws.

Good-afternoon /daily/.

>Elliott Smith - Roman Candle. Didn't appeal to me much and felt far too bare without really carrying a lot of emotion, especially compared to his later albums.
>Elliott Smith - s/t. This was a huge improvement on Roman Candle and featured a more diverse set of instruments including a cello, harmonica and drums on an odd couple of tracks which allowed each song to craft its own identity. Especially enjoyed the air organ on Coming Up Roses.
>Elliott Smith - Either/ Or. Presumably a reference to Kierkegaard. This tended far more towards folk-rock and was a significant improvement yet again, I feel that this heavily influenced Mac DeMarco. All the tracks on this are great.
>Elliott Smith - XO. My favourite of his by far. Has significantly more musical variety that combines both darker, introspective lyrics with sonorous soundscapes that melt through the record.
>Led Zeppelin - s/t. Better than I thought it was going to be though nonetheless the album to me essentially became "Dazed and Confused + everything else" the Page guitar solo on that track is fantastic.

>>74304061

Freeform update. Gonna just breeze through some of these, since I forgot, don't care, etc.

>The Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (1968)

I think I generally like these guys, and it's something I feel bad about giving a low score to for some reason. I think they show some nice creativity, but so much of this is just a failed experiment that's in no way pleasant.
4/10

>Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II (1969)

Never dug these guys, gotta say. Never had a Led Zeppelin phase. They have some good songs, which are the ones you've already heard a million times, and they are admittedly pretty damn good ("Whole Lotta Love", "Ramble On"), but you're crazy if you overlook some obvious clunkers here and call this album one of the all-time greats.
5/10

>Godflesh - Streetcleaner (1989)

Yeah, yeah, it's heavy. I still don't think something as rigid as industrial metal can inherently sound as heavy as my other favorite heavy albums, but everything's there (production, nice atmosphere building, etc.), all things considered. There's about 3x as much music as I'd ever want from this, and it's pretty repetitive, save for nice production choices here and there to spice it up ("Dream Long Dead").
6/10

>Wailing Souls - Fire House Rock (1981)

Nice, sweet, melodic reggae that's attained this cult status. No more, no less. I think it's fine where it is with cult status.
6/10

>The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! (1966)

People love to talk about the historical significance of this one. I've tried listening a few times now, and I still think this music hurts my ears.
4.5/10

>Koto Ensemble Of The Ikuta School - Japanese Koto Orchestra (1993)

I won't pretend to understand much of this. It's Japanese Chamber music, which I can't say I know much about, but it seems so odd and dynamic to my ears. Sounds quite a bit like Harry Partch's Delusion of the Fury. I kind of loved it.
7.5/10

>Steffen Basho-Junghans - Late Summer Morning (2006)

Steffen Basho-Junghans is quickly rising the ranks of my favorite American Primitivists--maybe second only to Fahey--and I might say one of the best musicians in the world right now. One thing that's noticeable is that his style is not necessarily even in the same ballpark as his so-called peers. I watched an interview with him in which he says how his style is inspired by nature and how a lot of his playing he does on long walks. This is apparent in what I've heard from him--his improvisational playing is much less rigid and technical than the old ragtime homage of Jack Rose, et al., and more free-flowing, arrhythmic at times, seemingly meant to respond to the sounds he hears around him. This is especially clear in the 20-minute title track which continues to build and build upon themes he lays out, like a folk raga. I think the clear draw of Late Summer Morning and what he does in general is this ability to unhinge truly and trust in the flow of his music as it presents itself at each moment.

I really shouldn't open up this can of worms again, but I got a 0.82 on that stupid formula which is embarrassing because my taste is awful.

>Panda, Geologist, and Avey - Danse Manatee
I really enjoyed the nocturnal atmosphere, it's almost peaceful. If it weren't for that I definitely wouldn't like this very much, it feels like everything is either disjointedly chaotic or sparse and aimless.
3.0-

>Radiohead - The Bends
Very pleasant, definitely an improvement over Pablo Honey. Nothing special though.
3.0-

>Kanye West - The College Dropout
I always thought that New Workout Plan was on Graduation; I didn't realize it was on here. I fucking hate that song, and hearing it right in the middle of this album was a real bummer.
Putting that aside, this album is alright. The production is great as expected, and I like a fair amount of the lyrics, but I'm not the biggest fan of Kanye's flow here. Also the album is loaded with interludes and skits that get old fast, and only serve to make a fairly long album even longer.

>Iron - Acid Memories
>Drone/Electronic fuckery
Not sure how I feel about the speech on X1, but this definitely puts me on edge. Your Hand Early and Even Be use glitchy single instruments amongst actual voices, the latter feeling especially twitchy and deluded. X2 ends the album with a hearty piece of drone.

I think the consistently glitch-like textures I see in lots of Torts' album art is subconsciously affecting me or something, because I dislike the constant graininess.

hi guys i'm about to maybe pull a zane haha
>belong - same places (slow version)
maybe my favorite title of any release, because it sort of captures perfectly the mood of the sounds within, sounds of which there are so vastly many that it's a bit overwhelming, but then again that's the point, to totally and effortlessly consume your entire being. belong's schtick is to bombard you with so many rich and evocative sounds that you can't help but feel the shimmering ecstasy of life in each fading stab of noise or muted texture. one of my favorite concepts is the sort of natural motion and vibration of life, the waving flow, the ins and outs and other such dualities. it's here, present in the one comically simple melody that repeats kind of forever, but it's drawn out and you feel every second of it, same places, slow version, pottery, whatever about the feelings, the point being it's totally encompassing and gorgeous drone music, and MAN does it hit me.

4.5+/5, probably a 5 within some short metric of time

I'M NOT FUCKING AROUND

Also the Bon Iver is too glitchy, Suf incorporated electronic sounds but on a more suave way.

>>74321666
No Now is closer to Bon Iver IMO
>>
>>74321666
Oh, had no idea that Clarence Clarity was the artist that had that strange-looking album. I'm going to try this Max Tundra. Also tried Bjork yesterday given the news - thought it was going to be some bland trip-hop with Yoko Ono vocals on it, boy was I wrong. Thanks a ton!
