Reddit: the person
It was a grouping of a scene, and anything that resembled that scene. The scene did have some aesthetic themes, but truth be told, punk bands like Seaweed, Nirvana, and Mudhoney, hard rock revivalist groups like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Screaming Trees, and sludge groups like Tad and Melvins really don't have that much to tie them together. Also, some of the very best bands that were thrown in got ignored because they weren't from Seattle, like Hazel, Babes in Toyland, and Paw.
These guys were probably the worst of all the Seattle bands, but holy shit I can't stop listening to this song.

Yes.
Also Screaming Trees was the best Seattle-area band.
>also is it a genre or a movement
neither
it was a marketing term meant to sell flannel shirts and stone temple pilots CDs

i never really saw the screaming trees as hard rock revivalists
they always struck me more as a college rock update on the harder end of 60s psychedelia and garage rock than anything else
great band in any case
