I feel the songwriting is as eclectic as it gets, there's experimentation going on all the time.
Benikujira is a nice song, but at the same time I feel it's one of their most traditional offers. It has a catchy chorus, but simple structure overall. Kera himself makes the song sound wilder than it actually is.
You don't like stuff like Mississippi? Nanairo jakkuri?
I still respect your opinions though, it's not everyday I get to discuss Uchoten.
I didn't know about Kidorikko, sounds interesting but I don't really see them that similar to Uchoten. Reminds me of an indies Yapoos or something. Will listen more of them, thanks for posting.

Yuji Ohno
Arakawa Band
Naosuke Miyamoto

Luckily you can find a lot of new music in the same vein by just researching all musicians who played on a record, other bands they played in etc..

>I feel the songwriting is as eclectic as it gets, there's experimentation going on all the time.
Usually I get the impression they throw in zany shit to cover up for songwriting that would otherwise be overly repetitive. Also that song has probably the best bass part of anything they've done, plus a weird jazz fusion sort of solo section.

>I didn't know about Kidorikko, sounds interesting but I don't really see them that similar to Uchoten. Reminds me of an indies Yapoos or something.
Kidorikko is basically cheap synth pop with heavy avant-prog influence. The songs are super complex with very ornate drum programming, etc. Kimitaka Matsumae is better known for doing game music, although it isn't especially interesting.

it's kinda too old for /mu/ to have experienced firsthand but not old enough for nostalgia

really there's a lot of great 90s-ish electronic stuff that's sort of forgotten. There's way more shit out there than Aphex, Autechre and Squarepusher. I mean no one ever mentions Arovane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC7dYxTSAbY
>>
>>74251566
Well, it's not hard to get the impression that they "throw in zany shit", they actually did, but I don't think it was to cover anything. I feel Uchoten is anything but repetitive, each album is quite distinct from each other, and sometimes there's sudden changes even within the same song. It's like unpredictable.
As for basslines, I think one of their fortes was the basslines
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmkVrgxCdww
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fRsMyQkkk0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa3L-9YpY-M

I think in most songs you'll hear busy basslines.

I wouldn't call them "god tier" but the 70s band Free was pretty fucking great for straight-forward rock. Paul Rodgers is still one of the best rock vocalists.

Just listen in release order.
If I had to select a few albums:
Anguish is their first album, and contains classic tracks like Metalhammer and Second Voice. This album is pure EBM/industrial and not too much of synth pop.
I.S.T. mixes their EBM roots with tracks like Deutschmaschine, Body Nerv which are also EBM classics, with more poppy songs such as Driving with my darling, it's a good mix of both And One faces.
Virgin Superstar is their most famous album, and also their most poppy, the name of the album is like a pun because it's when they signed with Virgin records. It still has a few EBM tracks (including one of their most known tracks, Panzermensch), but most of it is more pop, even a lot of ballads. It's a good album, but you shouldn't listen to this one first.
After virgin superstar they released Aggressor, might be my favorite album by them. Went back to their EBM roots. This album was majorly influenced by the dark events of early 2000s after 9/11, it has no happy-sounding tracks, unlike previous works.
And then Bodypop, where they perfected their mix of heavy EBM sound blended with synthpop, it no longer feels like some tracks are heavier than others, and some are too poppy, here's every track sounds like a balanced mix of both. "Military Fashion Show" which is also one of their most well known tracks is on this album.
If you like Bodypop, keep listening to the later albums like tanzomat and S.T.O.P, if you prefer their older, more industrial work, or something like Aggressor, go back and listen to their other early albums, like Flop and Spot.
Nordhausen and 9.9.99 9 Uhr are like proto-virgin superstar, so if you actually like that raw mix of industrial and straight up pop and ballads, check them out.
there's also many great And One tracks released only on EPs and singles, like Frontfeuer (sister EP of Bodypop) or Zerstörer (single from around the time Tanzomat came out, but this track remained single-only, and IMO is one of the best they did)

>>74248128
venetian snares
>>
>>74255330

Yeah, pretty much.

His music is also very soft and whimsical, which made his reputation kind of sour after the 70's.

It's a bit yacht rocky, too, but his music is hyper literate and really smart. Most of it is about history.
>>
>>74255439
Not much breakcore discussion here at all really. I'm quite fond of Datach'i and Xanopticon, I like abstract space breaks over the more ragga and gabber influenced stuff although that can still be pretty fun
>>
>>74255330

He gets written off as a pussy folk singer with a couple hits from the 70's that people of the time heard on the radio.

Time Passages is his other biggest hit, and even Al himself hates that song. The record label made him write it after Year of the Cat was a surprise hit.

Time Passages:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm6TsYypBpY

Overall, though, yeah, Al Stewart is too old for younger people on /mu/ to know who he is, and most of their Dads don't even like him, or really know who he is. Almost lost to time.

I only know of him from my Dad, actually. Though I became an even bigger fan of his than my old man.

He's pretty intimately tied to musical history, too. Specifically the folk scene in the UK. At one point he was Paul Simon's roommate in London, and Jimmy Page played guitar on his second album, Love Chronicles.
