From my experience, you can only appreciate the technical prowess and the qualities of the composition if the song is actually fucking enjoyable to listen to. If it sounds like shit then it sounds like shit. Real skill is creating something unique and well put together, while also giving it qualities that make it enjoyable even to those who wouldn't typically be familiar with the creation process of a song.

Of course it depends what you mean by "catchy". A lot of my favorite tunes arent "catchy", but they're not a collection of noises applied to the sound of altered television static or whatever.
