Why has 80s production aged so terribly in comparison to 90s, 00s and even 70s production?
because the 80s mainstream was obsessed with fads
It hasn't. It just became a meme to claim so. It sounds different, but that doesn't mean it's bad.
The discovery of new sounds and technology at the time made it easy to produce something that sounded "fresh", for the better part of the 80s. It's the type of thing you have in most decades outside of the 80s, only to a lesser extent.
Some 80s production has aged very well though. Pixies sound like they could be from any era.

i never had any problem with gated reverb
actually i think it gives music an ethereal and dreamy feeling

i actually love how this album is produced. besides loads of pop hits from the 80s still sound massively better produced than nowadays

and people abuse reverb now even more than they did in the 80s
The idea that something ages badly says more about the listener and current trends than the music you're listening to.
Everything that Trevor Horn touched is impeccably produced and above any criticism.
80s pop(which i think youre referring to) is less edgy and angsty, i really like them
