/gg/ do you think I should get a Hagstrom II or a Univox Hi-Flier? I know I'd like both of these guitars, they're thin, light weight, and I've heard good things about their necks. The only down side about the Hagstrom, however, is it doesn't have humbuckers.
I want to FUCK my 8 string!
>>74227025
Get the Hi-Flyer and pretend to be Kurt Cobain. With the Hagstrom you can only pretend to be Pat Smear, and he's not as fun to pretend to be as Kurt is

Actually if I get both I may become him.

I don't like Les Pauls that much though. There are so many unnecessary knobs when all I'm really going to do 90% of the time is have the bridge tone and volume all the way up. I'd rather mess with the settings on my amp to get the sound I want.

you can just slide your hand around them and let it all on 10

Learning electric guitar. I play mostly in my apartment bedroom and I have housemates I don't want to annoy. So far I've only practiced acoustically since I don't have an amp yet.
Do I:
- Buy an amp which would then mostly be used at low volume or with headphones.
- Buy a multi fx processor (like a Boss GT-1) and just play with headphones, with the added bonus of having a ton of effects
- Buy something else

I still think you need to practice more though. There's some quote that went something like "Don't practice until you can play it, practice so much that you can't get it wrong" I think that applies here. For example at around 00:49 the lead guitar sounds a little like jittery mush. I think you were going for a sound kind of like that but it sounds like it's executed poorly and could be worked on.
Some professional mixing would help too.
Overall it's still a solid track.
>>74247625
I'm still hearing timing issues on the rhythm guitar. Anyway you have some really clever ideas and decent chops, but I feel that you are overplaying. You didn't enter with any power or confidence, and the solo was rather disjointed. Their were flashes of brilliance in there which you need to harness and allow yourself to explore with a freer mind. You will be a great player one day. Work on timing and also on developing your solos to be more coherent or story-like. And remember: Preperation = confidence.
>>74247921
>>74247625
>but I feel that you are overplaying

Less is more.
>>74247625

>>74247994
How do I know what mode I'm in?
>>74248961
Generally speaking, if you're playing on the I chord, you're in Ionian, on the ii chord you're in Dorian, on the iii chord, you're in Phrygian, on the IV chord you're in Lydian, on the V chord you're in Mixolydian, on the vi chord you're in Aeolian, and on the vii(dim) chord you're in Locrian.
>>74248961
look within yourself
>>74249108
So do you technically change modes every time you change chords? That doesn't sound right.
>>74247625
You don't find the rhythm groove until 30 seconds in and then you lose it again about a minute later. Also, the soloing sounds too busy for all that riffing on the left. Great ideas, though.
How do I get out of my cover band gig? They are my best friends and we've been doing this for years but I'm not enjoying it anymore
>>74249454
I'm assuming you want to start writing your own stuff? If so, ask them if they're into that. If they're not, find a different band. If they are, good, write some shit.
>>74249273

>>74249273

You don't change modes when you change chords unless you're trying to illustrate the tonality of the chord you're playing over. For example, you could play A minor pentatonic over a Dm7 - G7 - Am - Cmaj7 progression, or you could play D minor over the Dm7, G Mixolydian over the G7, A minor over the Am, and C Ionian/major or C Lydian over Cmaj7. In most cases, it would probably be better to NOT try to play a new scale under each new chord because then your lead playing will just sound like you're running through scales.
Modes are just different names for the same group of notes in a given key played in different permutations. So D Dorian is the same scale as C major, just starting on D instead of C. D Dorian = D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D, C major/Ionian = C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Same notes, different order.
So why play the same scale, or within the same tonality, under two different chords? If you were playing a Dm7 - Cmaj7 vamp, soloing in D Dorian would both support the sound of the Dm7 chord (with the interesting addition of a major 6 interval to draw out a more colorful chord tone), while also highlighting the 2nd or 9th (same intervalic value) of the Cmaj7 chord.

I gotta put a list together of bands I wanna hear more of.
The pick hand looked kinda awkward at times. I didn't try to break it down, tho.

Idk, I've never heard anything particularly mind-blowing in Tera Melos' music, technique-wise, save for a few passages on their debut album. You've just got to get used to string-skipping and playing alternate voicings of some common major and minor chords.
>>74251295
If you like Tera Melos, check out The Fall of Troy and this German art-rock band called The Hirsch Effekt.
>>74251353
Gotta love Youtube for those full albums.

Wouldn't there only be two ways to treat this Dm7 chord? It's either the ii chord in C Major, or it's the vi chord in F Major, since it's a minor chord a whole step above a major chord.
Trying to play C Lydian on the C Major chord sounds weird/bad/wrong to me.
>>74251668
Oh actually it has to be D Dorian because it's not just C Major, but C Major 7.
>>74251693
>>74251668
Yeah, I mean technically playing D minor pentatonic works in both cases but I always find it more helpful to imply the key of a given cadence by indicating the quality of the 7th of each chord, thus how we know we're in C major rather than F major. Playing in Lydian isn't something most of us are very attuned to (unless you're Steve Vai) but using that #4 as a passing tone can add some brightness to your playing. Another fun melodic trick is playing minor arpeggios with a major 7th over minor chords: it's a pretty common device in bebop guitar and works in other soloing contexts (kind of like playing Dorian licks over a blues shuffle).
>>74251864
>D minor pentatonic works in both cases
That's because pentatonics are modally agnostic.
You can play minor pentatonic on any of the minor modes: Aeolian, Dorian, Phrygian
And major pentatonic on any of the major modes: Ionian, Lydian
I think of Mixolydian as a different family entirely, it's a Dominant mode.
Same with Locrian, it's for Half-Diminished chords.
God tier poor man rig
Also, could you recommend strat-sounding guitar, that doesnt look like strat?

I posted this the other week but got no responses.
Can anyone identify the brand of this instrument cable? It is circa late nineties and is from NYC. Inside the screw-in casing of the plug is a clear plastic tube that protects the soldered wires.

thats the theory behind them and how theyre formed, but they are different sounding scales in their own

he didnt say he doesnt want a les paulo anon, he wants a guitar that sounds like a strat

>that pick tapping solo
lol it really is raw music
>>74253477
Yeah, that's why I made the point about not changing modes with each new chord in a given progression. The differences in sound from mode to mode will be much more pronounced and can ruin the melodic flow of the solo.
>>74252054
nice vintage v100
ive been wanting one but im afraid the wider fretboard will make it bad for me to play, i'm comfy with this small les paul

Hey /gg/ I've been playing guitar on and off for maybe 1-2 months combined, I've only been doing chords though, should I start finger picking anytime soon? trying to follow Justinguitar but only recently got back into guitar and forgot where I left off. Thanks
What does "playing over" a chord really mean? Is it playing a scale in place of a chord, or playing the chord and then following up with a quick lick?

If you can afford to lose your ass, yes. I got in young so I played hard and won enough to set myself up to live easy. I started with $20,000. I don't live like a king though, I live like a normal lower/middle class person. That's my whole thing though, I'm free. You know what I'm going to do tomorrow? Whatever the fuck I want. Same thing the next day. As long as it not buying a yacht I'll be fine.
If I took the next step and got an internship at a hedge fund or something I could potentially turn my "fuck you" money into "fuck you in the ass" money, but I don't have the motivation to do so.
>>74258496
It sounds like you have money. Why get a job for reissue guitar? Just buy it.
>>74258690
can i start with something like 100? i'm 20
>>74258703
I have some money but not that much money. The Historic reissues I've been eyeing are sitting around $10,000 which is more than I can easily blow without supplementing my income.
Understand I don't need, I just want. This might be a phase that'll pass in a few weeks/months though.
>>74258750
