If you open up a tab with /mu/, /r/indieheads, /r/hiphopheads and pitchfork you can pretty much see what Fantano's going to talk about in his review. He just sits on those 4 tabs for a few days and writes down what everyone says, then pastes it into a word file and uses that as a review. That's why he always waits like a week or so before reviewing an album.

He has no original content. Also, on his second channel all he does is steal random articles he finds on the internet about music and reads them out loud. He's not even a real journalist. The only reason people subscribe to him is because they're impressionable children who are easily entertained by meme culture.

Fantano is absolutely not the most obnoxious or arrogant Internet personality, but that's because the bar is absurdly low.

He's been getting a lot worse and a lot less funny over time. He's a reasonable enough guy but in terms of content quality, it's not worth more than occasional background noise for me to learn about new musicians or whatever.

Worse, his opinion of himself seems to have unwarrantedly inflated more than I would've expected within the past year or so. It's not overt in every video, but especially in his new "fantano" channel the pretentiousness really oozes off.

Also his taste is not great.

He's just literally the only person in Youtube history to make a solo all-genre music review series with good production value. As soon as more people come along within the next few years with equivalent or better production but better commentary and insight, he's gonna be left in the dust and will probably have to stick to his memeshit.

His real flaw is that he just doesn't understand music or art in general well enough to review it. His entire identity is only well known because of the sheer amount of content that he pumps out, which isn't a good thing because it just adds up to a lot of really shitty at worst to mediocre at best videos. I genuinely think if /mu/ or some other community did some kind of talent scouting exercise to identify promising reviewers (be it for their musical knowledge and talent, sense of humor, whatever) and then hooked them up with a good video producer/editor, they could destroy Fantano.

I'm sure there are, but Fantano's basically had a monopoly on this for 10 fucking years. That's a lot of time for someone else to make a competing channel and run circles, but no one has. Why is that?

I think it's because music composing ability doesn't necessarily confer to:

-Good verbal skills (able to really articulate how you feel about something and why you think it's good or bad or particularly interesting)
-Great ears (able to immediately pick up on everything going on in a song at any given moment, and as a whole)
-Good speaking skills (a spoken, recorded review is very different from writing some Pitchfork post)
-Video recording, production, editing, and mixing skills
-Knowing how to market and monetize yourself and your brand

Fantano only has the latter 3 (and even that's debatable). Most good musicians are not good reviewers, and most good reviewers probably can't go on a camera and give their review in a clear, articulate, well-paced way, and then those will either need to spend a lot of time learning video production, or find someone else who does.

So I don't think it's as easy as you think. If it was, you'd see lots of competing channels with similar or higher subscriber counts.
