Thoughts on Skepta's Konnichiwa?
At first I couldn't see the appeal of this thing but this is his restless and no bullshit attitude finally convinced me. This Man can't stop.

I like it. I wouldn't call it pure grime though. Rap does seem to be the only thing to call it.

Dizzee spends the entire thing basically lambasting da yout for not giving him what is his perceived credit. But really, mans don't feel any kind of hate for Dizzee and know what he did. He can walk into any station, get a feature on any song he could ever want. Every grime mc loves Dizzee. It's the younger fans that don't and there's reason for that. Dizzee left grime.

And he had major success when he left. And it looked like he had absolutely no desire to ever return. And he does not address any of that on the album. It's full of "how dare you think I don't run this shit" verses, directed at fans who were under 10 when he last released a grime album. Stormzy was 9 when BIDC came out. This album, technically brilliant as always, it proves that as far as pure lyrical ability goes even with his departure he has no equal. Which only makes it hurt more that he did leave for such a fucking long time.

Grime really has no leaders in it except Wiley really. And Wiley has beefed with almost every single person in Grime at some point because he's genuinely mental/bipolar. But even then he never really wanted to be seen as the Godfather of Grime and only took up that mantle on his last album and it was given to him because he never left. That's why he still has so much love from fans and MCs alike.

In a way, I'm really glad this album wasn't a grime retread. The production is something special and he does his damndest to treat every beat like it's his actual competition and it feels great to hear him on beat he (co) produced himself again. If anything it showed that forward thinking Dizzee I last saw on Showtime, which I still think is underrated even with those terrible Stand Up Tall and Dream songs.

It's great to have this Dizzee back. Just verse two off Business Man is enough for me to be glad this album exists. And a bit salty he's been gone for so long.
