Modest Mouse or Built to Spill?
pic related is my choice
for me, its gotta be the mcchicken
probably tylo be chillin
Modest Mouse
I feel like MM and BtS are the yin yang of 90s indie rock. MM are cynical, angsty, angry, and resentful of society. BtS is more chill, dreamy, empathetic, nostalgic, and accepting of life's problems. To answer your question though, I like MM more. Isaac's lyrics cannot be matched, and they just have more good albums.
Pavement
Modest Mouse gives me a migraine
That's a tough one. I'm literally having too much trouble deciding.
Built to Spill are objectively better.

These
Modest Mouse has better Lyrics
Built to spill has better guitar work
Modest mouse is just a television rip off, built to spill - perfect from now on, alone has more worth than modest mouses' discography

I mean everyone's obviously going to say Built to Spill because its nowhere near as well known and just as influential. If Modest Mouse stopped after Moon & Antarctica and didn't break into the mainstream you'd all be vouching for them. Personally I don't like to compare the bands so I won't weigh in but there's obviously a bias here.

Modest Mouse bear no resemblance to Television in anyway whatsoever. I don't even understand how you can convince yourself of that - if anything they feature slight similarities to The Pixies and to a lesser capacity Pavement, otherwise they borrow slightly from Midwestern Emo and Built to Spill. Seriously Television? I'm sorry but do they feature dual-guitar interplay? Has there ever been a Modest Mouse track that features double-stopped guitars? Does Modest Mouse write songs about pertaining to New York City and escapades in the location? Even the guitar tone is significantly different. Lloyd and Verlaine both use string bends far more sparingly and are more focused on laser-precise guitar riffs that compliment each-other, Brock by comparison spams distortion atop string-bends left, right and centre.
Fucking Jesus how you can even compare the two raises so many questions that it stresses me out.
