You said you were aiming for something reminiscent of a film poster, the length and width of film posters are arguably their most recognizable trait, as the square shape is for album covers. There are posters and covers that don't fit within those shapes of course, but they're few and far between; if you're trying to make a piece of art that makes us think it's one or the other, it should fit within the aesthetics of either medium. Otherwise you're making a hood film and telling us it's supposed to make us think of science fiction.

No because that's never been a regular feature for something to be called a trailer, whereas when I search film poster on google images this is what pops up. Note that they besides the James Bond poster, (which is still a rectangle, albeit one on its side) they all share the common aesthetic of the rectangular shape I already talked about.

A trailer is a trailer be it on YT, on TV or at the cinema. But it will have the format of a trailer.

Yes, you can make a fucking poster square, but if you want people to immediately recognise it as a movie poster, maybe posting a square image on a music forum might mislead people into thinking it's an album cover.
Which you can't blame people for thinking, given that it actually is an (altered) album cover.
