Kinda always wanted to start a prog rock band with bossa nova, Modest Mouse-like indie and some light shoegaze influences, but when I was still in high school my band ended up being more shoegaze ska (guitarrist really liked ska and shoegaze and the drummer was just a really really solid drummer - I did do some experimentation but never really took it far). It was weird.

We didn't actually get any recordings done. That said, it was pretty much just ska rhythms played through a pretty simple sequence (reverb to fuzz to distortion) that we fucked around until we found the right sound. It was quite enjoyable.

That said, I pretty much didn't really manage to contribute as much as I'd like to, and being the only member of the band that really liked prog my contributions were mainly in ways of fucking with the groove (like having a song start on the second beat of a 4/4, which created a nice sensation of being in an odd time signature while really just being 4/4).

A great superband that achives to recapture a lot of the essence of the old prog (considering is from the late 90s - early 00s) with a big influence from 70s prog gems like Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, etc. and also with a influence from the bands from were the members originally are (Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Marillion).

But even that I kinda appreciate more later prog bands/musians (and musicians in general) that make something more "of their own" than "keeping up" with old stuff.

Dark Side of The Moon is a pretty good album, but I feel that a lot of their proggier stuff just kind of doesn't go anywhere compared to the other giant prog songs such as Supper's Ready and Close to The Edge. They definitely have their moments of genius and their lyrics tend to put other prog bands to shame, but DSOTM is the only album that holds my attention from start to finish. Animal Collective have cited early Floyd as an influence multiple times. I really do consider them the "modern Pink Floyd," as dumb as that may sound.

Avey = Waters/Syd: Writes most of the material; most creatively weird
Panda = Gilmour: Very melodic; wouldn't be as poppy without them
Geo = Mason: Isn't vocal; has the least recognized solo work; very rhythmically aware; Nick used a lot of tape effects, Brian uses a lot of samples
Deak = Wright: Vocal work and writing credits are sparse, but when it happens, the results are astounding. Best voice in their respective bands, imo, but both are self-conscious about their voices. Main difference between the two is that Deakin is very vocal in interviews, while Rick Wright was not.

My favorite prog bands are King Crimson, Yes, and The Mars Volta. Volta got me into prog, I consider myself pretty new to the genre, I've only been listening to like 2-3 years. I feel like I like the stuff that experiments with jazz drumming or tends to be fast. For example I think the rudiment based playing on Yes' Heart of the Sunrise is fucking sick and I feel like that kind of playing inspired a lot of the Volta drummers. Do you guys have any album/band recommendations for me?

I know. It's impossible to have a decent prog thread in here because everyone is more interested in ranking the same 5 bands rather than finding new music. I seriously do not see the point in all of this. (There's some good suggestions if you look though.)

Lmao Tool
>>
>>74143741
It's always 60's and 70's bands too.
>>
>>74143792
I can't think of a lot of prog bands that are worthwhile out of that era though.

outside of that era*

I guess no if you're not into prog metal.

Here's a band I've never seen mentioned on /mu/. They're a canterbury scene band that wrote one of my favorite prog epics, Symphony No. 2

Close to the Edge > Yessongs (doesn't really count since it's live but what the heck) > Fragile = Yes Album > Relayer > the rest

Does anyone else feel like Dream Theater is the band for prog plebs?
>>
>>74143826
I like some proggy metal stuff but, yeah, in general I'm not a fan prog metal. I like metal a lot though for some reason. Share if you have any though!

I remember listening to some of their stuff while looking for prog. I should give them another listen, I know they've been important to the genre or something.
>>
>>74143853
They have a few good albums, why are they strictly for plebs?
>>
>>74143853
Dream Theater is the band for people with bad taste in music.
>>
Rush never get enough recognition in these threads.
>>
>>74143863
I'm not denying that they have a handful of good songs out of their huge catalog, but I just feel like they are the band people who know nothing about prog gravitate towards as the band that is the "greatest progressive band of all time". Almost like how Avenged Sevenfold is regarded by entry level metal listeners

I love TRAM and Endless sporadic.

You have to check out Trioscapes, they're kinda like TRAM but just bass sax and drums, with the bass player being from between the buried and me. Songs kinda long, but you can skim through for an example of what they are.

This one is more fusiony but still pretty good
>>
>>74143893
Well that's just their view. Maybe over rated yeah, but they're still pretty damn good at what they do and they have some mad technical skills
>>
there is literally nothing wrong with pre-astonishing dream theater
>>
Surprised I only saw one mention of ELP in this thread.
Also Focus.

>one fucking mention of Devin Townsend
Is /mu/ like the high street music stores that just consider his output to be universally metal right down to the new age & space country albums?

Pink Floyd, but for some reason I've never been able to care for DSotM & consider it one of the most overrated albums of all time. My uncle tells me it's because I'm a pleb who hasn't dropped acid, but I don't feel like it's beyond me or anything; just that it's overall pretty unspectacular

King Crimson

Some of Haken's stuff is pretty great too

Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

Been trying to get into Zappa recently but have no idea what I'm doing so have just been watching Black Page 2 on repeat, which may basically be floundering around in the deep end a bit

>>74133153
The last track you posted was really good. Thanks for sharing some more obscure stuff because holy hell were you right about this thread being the same bands over & over

>>74134022
Enjoyed this a lot

Kinda trying to get into Italian prog, any reccomendations?
