**IF YOU'RE NEW, AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN, READ THIS FIRST!***

It's the 30rd of December.
The point of these threads, is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this, by listening to, and ideally, discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture out of their comfort zone by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day, and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in the following posts. We encourage you to write the albums' titles, and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars, we use simple image editing softwares.

You can predetermine a schedule for a month, or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various way, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

We used to do listen alongs, but we don't really have the time anymore. For this, we had a plug.dj room, which we still use occasionally to hang out for a little while. It's usually empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, post in the thread, there most likely will be someone up for it. You can find it here:

In case plug.dj is not working, we have a backup wavelength room. You can find that here:
>wavelength.fm/stripey's

The threads usually start around 15:00 GMT. Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them. If the thread is not yet up by 15:30 GMT, we encourage you to start it, just be sure to use the standard OP. Of course you can start it earlier than that too.

Templates:
https://mega.co.nz/#!R0YGVYKC!TtdMxj6TFRXPAn8EK1cQKaTClVPbaS-sUlhrZHTpTgQ

Most importantly, have fun!
>>
So, i'm going to Slovenia tomorrow, need some music for the trip so go ahead and rec me everything that is shorter than 4 hours!

Thanks in advance love you all xoxo

Alright, I'll have eight people and 30 +/-5 min compilations to start with. I can go up to a maximum of twelve people if there's interest but only four will progress from the first round and I won't wait long after the eighth has submitted theirs to get on with it. Edit the tags so I don't have to, cover and title mandatory, include your name in the notes field.

Count me out on ever listening to something like that. I'm not saying I don't want people playing older compositions, but he sounds like he's faintly breathing through a tube in his neck in this recording, and it's edging on whistling. I'd prefer keeping ASMR out of my music

it's just too long for its own good imo, and also a lot of focus on Kamashi who isn't always the one most interesting playing
but still pretty impressive how a 3h spiritual jazz album has made it so big, even though it's mostly because of what it's associated with
>>
>>74135166
yeah an album like the epic charting is awesome, but if Kamasi hadn't played with kendrick it would have never gotten that big

and you're right about too much focus on Kamasi, i feel like the piano is the big highlight

>Don Cherry - Don Cherry [Orient]
Absolute masterpiece, pretty much a culmination of multiple perfected jazz fetishes of mine (one example being the rattling percussion). This feels like it was made just for me to hear it. Magical throughout, but especially during the second half of Eagle Eye when the crowd starts singing along, brought me to tears and made me want to give all of humanity a hug. There really is no criticism I can give this record, except perhaps the slight second-hand embarrassment I felt when he was initially trying to get the crowd to sing along (the product of this was well worth it, definitely not worth -0.5 stars for). I think I'll let this sit in my 5's for a bit and see how it feels.

The loud "CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA-CHA" chant is orgasmic.

Lovely and depressing, especially considering that this was recorded in Armenia during the Armenian genocide. Really enjoyed her voice and the crackling sound of the record.

>Huntsville - For the Middle Class
FUCK this was mindbending. ive only given this one listen so far, but damn this was great. I absolutely love the clear krautrock influence, and the folk-y bits were incorporated extremely well. Maybe I don't really know what an electroacoustic album should feel like, but this didn't feel like a normal one to me. It was just a blast to listen to, good energy and very meditative.

i remember trying this a few years ago and hating it. crazy how much my taste has changed since then. i was rec'd this when i gave out of the blue a 5, and while i can see the comparison, this has a much different feel. its a little more baroque, more playful, and just all-around pleasant. ill definitely be revisiting more.

honestly, wasnt too impressed by this. some of the drones and noises that appear on this album are pretty nice, sure, but all-in-all, i dont think this is a really captivating onkyo album. idk, i guess theres other onkyo and drone id rather listen to.

Kamasi Washington - The Epic (2015)
>spiritual jazz

Like Fish said, not as good as some people say, and not as bad as some people say. It's mostly just three hours of pretty decent jazz, nothing more. The more fusion-based tracks are exceptional, they're funky as hell and all the performances are exceptional, especially the keyboard/piano work and the very rock-influenced drums. When it goes more into post-bop or soul jazz territory things tend to slow down. It's never bad, but Washington isn't exactly doing anything new or especially interesting on the sax, and some of the vocals are distractingly over-the-top. Of course, it's also /much/ longer than it needs to be, streching at most 90 minutes of material to an insanely bloated 180 minutes. It really does have its wonderful moments, and the opener is an absolutely incredible piece of massive, widescreen, technicolor jazz, so it's a worthwhile listen, just not a great one.

Common - Like Water for Chocolate (2000)
>conscious hip hop

Smooth as hell with an undeniably potent conscious edge to it. Common is honestly the weakest link here. He's a great MC, but just like on Be he's easily overshadowed by the production. Be is easily dominated by Kanye's soulful production, but this is bolstered by J Dilla's absolutely incredible jazzy boom bap. This just confirms my belief that Dilla is the absolute best drum producer around, every beat on this album is immediately hard-hitting and just plain fun to listen to. DJ Premier, Karriem Riggins, and The Roots also do great jobs on the production as well. Some not so great rhymes hurt the vibe, other than that this is wonderful. "Hurt" is a new favorite.

Serpentwithfeet - blisters (2016)
>art pop, alternative R&B

One of the most interesting, out-there takes on R&B I've heard, and probably one of the few releases in the genre that actually deserves the title "alternative". A gospel influence takes over this entire EP, Serpentwithfeet's voice resonates with a ghostly passion, and the ominous choirs give this whole thing a really eerie, spiritual vibe. The production does get /very/ stale, however. It's still very unique, albeit very plodding and rather one-note.

2.5

Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt & Sonny Rollins - Sonny Side Up (1959)
>bebop

Chalk my general lack of love for bebop up to my nonchalance regarding this. Post-bop and hard bop both rule (I've only given one post-bop release less than a 3, fun fact), but plain ol' bebop is just not what I look for in jazz. It's affable and fun and danceable, but with that comes a generally generic and plain sound that fails to grab my attention. The players are killer though, especially Dizzy. His monstrously fast-paced work on "I Know That You Know" makes up the album's best moments, and definitely its most interesting.

>ricebean recs Colugo - Music For People

nice comfy detailed ambient-y beats and rhythms. not an album to hit you very hard, but really well done and fun to listen to.

7/10

>kanzler recs Noir For Rachel - Fog Museum

definitely not my kind of thing to begin with, but to add to that its not very good sounding. its sort of a shoegazy alt rock thing going on and youd expect the band to at least have a good guitar sound to accompany that but its pretty weak and canned sounding. sorry kanz :Y

Fear - The Record (1982)
>hardcore punk, punk rock

Totally middle of the road hardcore. The vocalist is alright (even though he's pretty much a watered-down Jello Biafra) and "Let's Have a War" and "New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones" are both absolutely awesome. Can't find much else to really like in this, though. The production is really thin and cheap sounding, and the general meat-headed nature of the album is fairly irritating. Pretty fun, I guess.

The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld (1991)
>ambient house, ambient dub

Chill and harmless, but honest to god some of the most boring, static music I've ever heard in my life. "Little Fluffy Clouds" starts the album off on a cute, fun note, but the album subsequently turns into nearly two hours of samey ambient noodling, with some nature noises occasionally thrown in. The Orb does this style of ambient well, but they have absolutely no right to stretch it out for this long, especially given how similar most of these tracks are. The dancier tracks are very nice, but I don't think even they could stay interesting for this long.

>Regis - Adolescence: The Complete Recordings 1994-2001
Alright, I'm falling hard for the meme with this one. This right here is nearly 4 hours of the most consistently pummeling, mind-numbing techno I've ever heard. The descriptors on rym sum this up pretty well: "cold, mechanical, hypnotic, repetitive", but I want to add one to that list: Lifeless. And this isn't a bad thing, in this case. When listening to this powerhouse of a compilation, its easy to find yrself lost in it, yet you still feel something from it. It sucks the life right out of you. On top of all of this, it's simply some of the best techno I've ever heard. It's relentless, its rhythmic, its dense and layered- everything techno should be to me. I can see myself easily throwing this on at any time. So yeah, I loved this thing, along with all my other rym friends who rated this 4 and above. I highly recommend it.
4.5-

It took me over a week to listen to 2 albums, i am shit at /daily/

>The Pop Group - Y
This strays between some of the best post-punk ever to just complete wankery nonsense. She is Beyond Good and Evil is incredible, a dance-y yet menacing track and We Are Time is another standout too, but it does get let down by some really unnecessary tracks.
3

>This Heat - Deceit
Absolutely incredible album. Everything here just fits perfectly together. The eery yet beautiful chanting on Sleep and Paper Hats is just a fantastic song. The only criticism is that it is a bit front loaded but that's probably just because side A is just so fucking good.
4.5, pretty much on the border of being a 5.

why pavement hate?

I guess part of the answer is that a good majority of indie music is bad, and a majority of "lo-fi" music isn't great either

but GBV is at least decent, so I don't know why Pavement can't be the same

Speaking of lo-fi indie, I have no idea why more can't be like this. Extremely unique for something under that label.

For something so variable, it shifts in and out of genres with delicate grace. Gives me a warm nostalgic feeling and I'd highly rec. Sorta in the ballpark of TFUL282 but perhaps more neat ideas than fully fleshed out songs.

I've slipped. Forgot to review these right away, so here are jumbled thoughts on stuff I've been meaning to give the proper treatment to, some for quite a long while.

Harder They Come deserves a place on the reggae Mt. Rushmore for introducing the genre to the masses. The title track is truly a standard in any genre.

Terry Reid is halfway between Nick Drake and Robert Plant and he was originally offered the role in Led Zeppelin. Incredible voice, a few half-baked folk songs here though, unfortunately.

Bob Marley Live is quality, of course. He gets a bed rep for x, y, and z, but find a flaw in him or his incredible live band here. Extremely good vibes.

The City predates Carole King's Tapestry, but is its equal in terms of quality.

Sleeping Beauty was nice and relaxing and quaint. Nothing exciting, but I'll return to it.

Gaucho exists in a vacuum. Such an odd normalization of otherwise-soulless AOR. You can find quite a bit of soul and its pain if you listen closely.

Salvador Kali is just fine but unequivocally a step below anything from Sun City Girls.

Begin is a sunshine pop masterpiece on par with anything else I've heard in the genre. There's a deep understanding of melody and the general study of feel-goodness in music. Paying close attention to the satisfying production style as well.

Peter Tosh shows us the other side of the coin that is Legalize It with something serious. He continually is able to show personality extremely well.

Finally, it's reactionary, but I still don't get as much out of the sickeningly sweet Odessey and Oracle. I'll name a dozen forgotten-by-time groups that did a similar thing at the same level.

important: do NOT take any advice in music making from me. i use possibly the most autistic methods to put together everything. im somehow able to use audacity for all these kinds of stuff but i recommend using a real DAW and watching some tutorials, or find someone else

>>74170147
really all i did was some beat matching and occasionally layering a track or two, it's not hard at all
