you must develop a taste for drone and post rock before going into this to acclimate yourself to the kind of music swans make, for their earlier stuff listen to some industrial and no wave

start with Filth and listen to every era of the band in order to truly understand and appreciate their later work since they modern releases are made up of influence from every single era of Swans, so appreciating their early material is imperative.
This is not to say that The Seer, TBK and Glowing Man are their absolute best, far from it. But it's a bad jumping off point simply because of how much of the music is built up from influence from all of the other eras of the band

You just gotta smile.
Well listen to a lot of the velvet underground first, specifically white light white heat.
great band my dude. i dont know... to be kind was the first thing i heard.
Having listened to them almost exclusively for twelve years, having fully and thoroughly explored their discography and related side-projects, and having read a number of interviews of Michael Gira that exceeds 200, I am the foremost authority on Swans in this website--and probably in the world, surpassing even Gira himself. I have dedicated more than 50 hours of arduous study and dissection to each album (excluding Love Of Life), live album (excluding Omniscience), and EP. Start with "White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity". I am eager to respond to any further queries.

Please note: arduous study is greater in intensity than active study, leisurely study, active listening, and passive listening.
