This has never not been true. Any nigger can rhyme some coonspeak together, the talent has always been with the producer. Beats are 95% responsible for making a good hip-hop song, all the rapper has to do is not nig too hard so he doesn't ruin them.

This and also because rap has changed considerably. The starkest contrast is if you look at what was coming out of the east coast twenty-ish years ago and compare it to what's charting now.
Rap has had a paradigm shift from being about thoughts to being about feelings. It's shifted to becoming more raw. Raw not in the sense of trying to be more of a gangsta or more of a killer, but in the strict sense of unrefined. A lot of the charting rappers genuinely freestyle their verses. That's not to say they do it in one take, but however many tries it takes, it's organic. It may not be sophisticated or thoughtful, but it's genuinely the feelings they're experiencing or wanting to experience. It captures a feeling other people want to experience too, even if it is mostly being wild and cross-faded and partying.

In other words, old-heads will often think it's trash. This goes double for the conscious crowd. The people that are really getting the most out of the new wave are actually the meme-boys that don't listen too close, don't scrutinize, and just go with the feeling.

Just go look on youtube for any rapper talking about the process into making their music and it's always "UHHH DEY PUT ON DA SICK BEAT AND I SPIT TO DAT SHIT AYYY"

This. Writing a rap song with meaningful lyrics is eons harder than writing just a regular song with good lyrics.

Has always been mostly true but especially now. I find myself listening to some god awful lyrical content for the amazing beats. It's kind of annoying.
