Kate doesn't do the artwork, doesn't direct and edit her videos and she had plenty of help on her albums. Grimes is more involved in her art.
>started even younger
She was under the guidance of a major label, unlike Grimes who learned mostly by herself and sang everywhere, even in warehouses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7rM67NPhZ8
Grimes is that rare case of an underdog who succeeds against all odds.
BTW, Grimes actually started in 2006-2007 when she was around 19. She released an EP named Lethe on Myspace on December 2007.

>>74065148

>>
>>74065767

I'm saying they're more talented one and second i haven't seen nearly as much threads literally only dedicated to how much they love grimes.

I've seen a few Bjork threads but Kate bush rarely, they get mentioned because they're obviously well known get recognition and critical praise.

So i'm saying /mu/ obsession with grimes goes beyond music and isn't even comparable to Kate bush when you're talking obsession levels.
-
i.e /mu/ obsession and praise of grimes is disproportionate and biased, Kate Bush or Bjork on the other hand are objectively better artists/musicians
>>
>>74065824
Are we really supposed to fucking care?
>>
>>74065837
There are literally Kate Bush and Bjork threat daily. Not much as Grimes, but they exist.
>>
>>74065837
You're still talking about grimes though aren't you? Why is that
>>
>>74065853

I guarantee if you do the math and make a chart of how many times grimes get's mentioned compared to say Kate bush i'd be double....

That's a logical conclusion to make considering Kate bush is an older artist and hasn't released an album in like 6 years or something
>>
>>74065837
>I'm saying they're more talented one
How are they more talented if they need way more people to achieve their visions? Grimes does everything by herself. I'm not saying about the quality of the music, which is entirely subjective.
>So i'm saying /mu/ obsession with grimes goes beyond music and isn't even comparable to Kate bush when you're talking obsession levels.
Bjork and Kate threads have way more pictures per posts than Grimes threads. That says everything.
>>
>>74065837
>Kate Bush or Bjork on the other hand are objectively better artists/musicians
(You) are clearly biased.

* insert grimes pasta *
>>
>>74065912
That makes perfect sense because Grimes is a newer artist while Kate Bush and Bjork are old news already. They're past their prime and all their best work is behind them. Let's not fool ourselves: they're going to top Hounds of Love and Homogenic. Meanwhile, Grimes is still evolving and releasing vital work. Maybe her magnum opus wasn't even released yet. There's more excitement surrounding her work.
>>
>>74066315

Meanwhile grimes is still evolving well yes she's young and her career is on going, > old news already.

What ? already ? Kate bush and Bjork had/have a prolonged career and have made far more albums than grimes

>There's more excitement surrounding her work.

Yes exactly that's the point she's a new artist of course there is more excitement because it's NEW, i'm convinced Grimes won't be as relevant in years to come.

Kate Bush is pushing 60, Grimes will burn up much faster, the reason being that's she's not as diverse and is very current in her approach.
>>
>>74066269

Grimes isn't nearly as diverse in her musical ability as say Bjork

>Kate Bush is pushing 60, Grimes will burn up much faster, the reason being that's she's not as diverse and is very current in her approach.
What are you even talking about? All Kate Bush albums sound about the same, more or less. All Grimes albums are really different to each other. You can't confuse Art Angels with Halfaxa or Geidi Primes with Visions. Her diversity goes beyond album level: individual songs from an album are really different to each other. e.g. Scream compared to Easily.
>i'm convinced Grimes won't be as relevant in years to come.
We'll see. Grimes is smart enough to not make the same album twice if she wants to remain relevant. Her next album will sound like nothing she released before. Mark my words.

Wrong. You can't pretend her songwriting isn't top notch. There's a reason why songs like Oblivion were chosen as the song of the decade. Her songs are extremely well built and catchy. Her singing is also very rich and diverse; her voice has over 4 octaves.
>>
>>74073358
You can't even stay on subject, m8. Fuck off for good. I commented on her performance. Watch live performances. She essentially has some one else que up her song, and she strums a guitar some of the simplest chords, while struggling to stay on key.
Fuck off, grimesfag. I did not mention her song writing. What is the point of being dumb as bricks?

There are countless of positive reviews of her shows. People actually enjoy her shows despite some flaws - she's not a perfect singer by any means. She's dancing and playing instruments while singing, that's why her singing isn't always as good as it could be.

Her worse shows were worse mostly because of her voice wasn't on top form for various reasons - flu, not rehearsal, fatigue, in ear monitor problems, a bad day. But those shows sounded great regardless because they're really loud and she could hide the imperfections quite easy. When you have such big beats - try Venus Fly live - the voice is on the second place.

BTW, many times she was sick and she still performed.
>I felt so sad for her having to play her final tour date as her homecoming with the stomach flu: multiple times during her set she was holding her stomach and trying not to retch, but unfortunately she had to pause for about 5 minutes at one point to vomit into a trash can backstage, then as she came out she had a bit more come up while trying to hide it as best she could. But once this was done, she said NO to any more of her backup dancers' help, THREW water on her face, and kept pouring quite literally everything she had out for the most supportive audience imaginable. She sadly had to quit 10 minutes early regardless, but all the same it was easily one of the best performances I've ever seen at Osheaga and it just solidified my belief that Claire IS the most perfect fucking human ever. My queen. My world princess. Fuck I love you, Claire, you tough bitch. Fangirl story done. Hopefully video of this will be up soon so this post can have that much-needed extra dimension to it.

Have you ever been to one? Saw her for the first time last year during the Art Angels tour in the U.S. and she was phenomenal. The youtube videos you've seen/what you may have seen/read of her performances prior to AA don't do her justice AT ALL. Based on what I've read/experienced with my own eyes, she might as well be a totally different artist when it comes to her performing now vs. just 2-3 years ago.

I've seen her three times now. The first time was in a tiny space where she was managing a lot of her own equipment, and it was right on the brink of impressive.
The second time was around a few years ago and it seemed like she was getting a little lazier with stage performance ie: just pressing a button to start her prerecorded beat and singing over it and adding a little piano here and there.
The last time was fairly recent and it was so bad. It was really like she was waiting around for some one to press a button FOR her and the squealing over it. It was just really bad.

I went through an obsession with her regardless of witnessing first hand her decline as a live performer, and watched video upon video of her live and it seems like she isn't interested in being some one ground breaking to any type of underground music scene. She's content being a lazy pop musician.
I'm excited for her new album, anon. Don't get me wrong. But I'm starting to get this feeling of like "man, I wish she would just be a producer," because I feel like this is her strongest suit.
>>
>>74076656
A long list of literally whos that no one cares about. I bet that most of them aren't even producing their own music like Grimes, Bjork and Kate Bush.
>Hildegard von Bingen
Nice meme from centuries ago. Did you even listen to her music?
>>
>>74076816
Yeah, fuck Hildegard von Bingen for not producing the recordings of her century-old works
>>
>>74076714
Not that anon. That was just a sad pathetic post. I have no idea what the hell do you expected from her shows if you were so disappointed. Let me guess: you're a failed musician. You think you know better than her.
>But I'm starting to get this feeling of like "man, I wish she would just be a producer,"
Plenty of people would disagree with you. How about not attending her shows anymore if you find her fun performances so repulsive, hipster? Stick to her recorded music.
>it seems like she isn't interested in being some one ground breaking to any type of underground music scene
She's interested in making her honest DIY music, not to please your pretentious taste.
>>
>>74076861
Let's put her aside (she's an exception; she was an influence to Grimes too); what about the others?
>>
>>74076714
>witnessing first hand her decline as a live performer,
It's got nothing to do with her "declining" desu. It's because of the dancing. Ask any professional singer with serious training and they will tell you the same thing I'm telling you now: It is acoustically impossible for someone to sing on the breath and in tune while also essentially running/jumping around on stage like she was doing for her most recent tour. It's an unavoidable trade-off to working both the front stage crowd and the back of stage equipment like she does.

Nothing has technically declined about her musicality or technique. It's just a very difficult thing to strike a right balance between physicality and singing. It takes years of practice to build up that sort of discipline/muscle memory. Imo her next album/tour are likely to be much better in terms of the issues you had with the AA era. Because she very obviously pushed to the limits of what is possible in live performance with the AA tour, and now has that hard-won experience to go by for future endeavors.
>>
>>74076870
I've only seen her so much because I genuinely love her music, anon. She's shit live. Just because you like an artist doesn't mean you have to worship the ground they walk on, though.
Her music stopped being honest diy when she sat down into being a popstar as opposed to anything inventive.
and lol anon

>Her music stopped being honest diy when she sat down into being a popstar as opposed to anything inventive.
Lmao! Her music is still honest DIY because 1. she does it herself as before 2. she genuinely likes pop music. Also you imply that an artist can't be an innovative popstar. See Bjork and Kate Bush as prime expamples of innovative popstars.
>She's shit live.
As I said, don't attend her shows anymore.
>>
>>74065320
ayyyyyy
>>
>>74077118
Yeah, am super psyched.
I should add that I was actually expecting to be somewhat disappointed by the quality of her live singing (because of all the running around I'd seen in videos) but honestly had no complaints about anything in the actual show I saw, most likely because the sound was mixed really well in the venue. And the other thing about her particular live performance style circa the AA tour is particularly sensitive to mixing/monitoring issues. Belt-mounted packs/in-ear monitors aren't particularly fond of being tossed around. And a singer is only capable of keeping their voice in line with music if they are capable of hearing it.

What she does live is actually pretty drastic and daring when considered from a stage tech/sound engineer's perspective. Yeah, it doesn't always work. But when it does, some really cool things can happen.

Saw her once in 2013, left the show half way in and just went to the bar next door.

She sounded like a grimes high school cover band, I would of honestly just preferred it if she pressed play and sung to a backing track, at least it would have been somewhat coherent and structured. The 'lol i'm a shy awkward artist' live bullshit only works for grimesfags who have never seen live music before.

4AD is an indie label. They were the only ones who released Visions as it was.
>>
>>74077438
Bullshit post. Her live performances are 2 deep 4u.
>>
>>74078697
4AD is a part of Beggar's Group, a much larger company. And even if she was just signed to a sole indie label, she still wouldn't be "true" DIY
>>
>>74078729
>she still wouldn't be "true" DIY
Really? She's more DIY than all your favorite artists. She has 100% control over her music. Whatever you hear and see related to her music was her intention. I'm sure her label would prefer a nice picture with her on the cover; instead they have to do her way and put her artworks.
BTW 4AD being part of a bigger group is irrelevant. This label doesn't mess with their artist's work.
>>
>>74078855
>She's more DIY than ALL your favorite artists
that's just retarded to assume
A "true" DIY artist (and this is not a measure of quality, mind you) would not have a distributor or record label.
>>
>>74078729
>Because of the internet, there’s so much information all the time. It’s not about when you hear about someone, it’s about when they grab your attention so hard you can’t ignore it anymore. With Grimes, I was already aware of her, she’d made two albums and an EP. I was on my way to Pop Montreal, and I met her manager at the time, who ran the label she was on, and found out that they were looking for a partnership, someone that they could work with outside of Canada. Her music at that point was not obviously commercial, so they were talking to independent labels. There were a lot who really liked her, but I remember Claire saying we were pretty much the only ones who would take Visions and put it out just as it was, other labels apparently asked for her to rework it with a producer.
>The other thing I would say about Grimes is that there was so much happening around her at that time that I assumed she was already working with a bigger label. The first time I went to see her play and I was kicking myself for missing that opportunity. It was the best show I’d seen for a new artist at that time. The next day I met her manager and they said they were looking for partners and I literally ran back to my room to email my boss her record. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need a label anymore to get things started, a good label will enhance what you are already doing. By the time Claire was signed, she was already releasing records on a small imprint, touring and doing interviews, and she had a visual presence.

So?
>>
>>74078880
You're confusing distribution with making art. I meant DIY regarding making the actual music. Her label just releases it as it is, no messing around. If she didn't have a label we wouldn't even have this discussion here because she would be obscure.
>>
>>74078919
>we wouldn't have this discussion here because she would be obscure
Do you know where you are?
>>
>>74078902
This is the relevant part that proves that she's DIY and that her label doesn't mess with her artistic intent:
>I remember Claire saying we were pretty much the only ones who would take Visions and put it out just as it was, other labels apparently asked for her to rework it with a producer.
Claire is a huge control freak.
