From what I understand about coal it's not a job, but a lifestyle. In a lot of those coal towns you had several generations of miners, their great grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers all mined the coal.

uhh, well back then a lot of towns were actually built around the mines. It generated all the income. When the mines were empty, all of the workers couldnt't get work anywhere else and their communities were just destroyed. Listen to North Country Blues by Bob Dylan. It's a great song that tells a story about it. A dead American dream.
