I was lucky to grow up learning multiple instruments with teachers and by myself, all at the same time. I consider myself lucky to have been able to afford to take a few more private lessons here and there with my own money after I moved out. I consider myself lucky to have been able to jam (completely improvise) music with total strangers in a new city and have some of them become my friends. I consider myself lucky to have most of my closest friends be musicians as well.

And yet, I still feel like I can't call myself a musician. I don't publish, I rarely write, and after my car broke down beyond repair, I sold most of my instruments and stopped jamming.

I try not to get jealous of my friends and local musicians I've met who were able to afford going to music schools and gig regularly, playing rock, hip-hop, jazz and orchestral music.

It ain't that easy, but give it a few years, and of course we'll find a way to put our noses to the grindstone again. At every level, there will be people criticizing you, saying you're not good enough. Even the masters who have been at it for decades get told the same bullshit.
