guy on the left looks like a loliphile

Perfectionists in the studio, and it shows a lot in their first 8 albums, all while incorporating multiple instruments so each song has its own distinct sound to it. They're the band that you either really love or really hate. They get some hate for being too yacht rock (especially their gaucho album).

Peak music, truly ascended. Aja is all the evidence you need. Lately I can't get Parker's Band out of my head.

The Royal Scam is the shit.
>>
>>74036506
Pure auditory kino. It's largely music about nothing, but holy hell is it pretty to listen to.

Aja is their masterpiece, The Royal Scam is arguably better, and Gaucho is criminally underrated.
>>
>>74036539
Hey Nineteen is literally about a coke-addled 30-something and his self-loathing as he keeps going to parties and banging barely legal college thots in an attempt to still feel young and worth something. So yeah, you're not that far off.
>>
>>74037807
This

>loliphile

Is that weebspeak for pedo?
>>
The only schlock band ever worth something, pretentious as fuck but the music is infectious as all hell.
>>
>>74037833
All truth.

>>74037952
If you want to get into real creepy Dan territory check out Two Against Nature.
>how about a kiss for your cousin dupree

It's also one of their best.

Are you two kidding? Home movies is about a guy who invites neighborhood kids into his home to show them bootleg porn.

Katy Lied is the first Dan album I ever listened to, and as much as love I them, they're sleazy as fuck. But then you get a guitar solo like you get on Chain Lightning II and it's hard to make sense of them. What the hell is this band really playing at?
>>
They're great, own almost all their records up to Gaucho. Katy Lied is an underrated one.
>>
>>74038385
>>74038392
Admittedly I haven't listened to Katie Lied yet. Pretty big oversight for how big of a fan I claim to be.
>>
pretty good for a band named after a dildo

As well
>>
>>74038525
They have so many good albums it takes a while to get around to all of them. They're all pretty equal in quality up to Gaucho.
>>
Glad to finally see a thread about these guys. They're on a whole other level.

>deacon blues
>it's about an artist who pursues the life of his dreams
>knowing full well that it will result in him dying way too young

Like, fuck man.
>>
>>74038385
I think the song you are thinking of is called Everyone's Gone to the Movies, not Home Movies.

But yes, Steely Dan are not afraid of creepy/dark/sleazy themes and Katy Lied is one of their worst (best). Most cynical band ever.

That's my fuckin anthem.

Gaucho's an amazing album until you pay attention to the drums. And even then the title track and Babylon Sisters are god-tier performances by god-tier drummers
>>
>>74038750
Two Against Nature is excellent, even after all those years it was the perfect follow-up to Gaucho.
>>
Great music, but they were ugly looking af back in the 70's, 80's, etc. getting old has helped their looks a bit, I see.
>>
>>74045850
You don't like the drums on Gaucho?
>>
Ive only heard Reelin in the years and I liked the track.
How do I get into Steely Dan? Could someone rec albums
>>

Chronological order is fine.

Don't fall down the rabbit hole of paying attention to the drums. Fucking Wendel. Babylon Sisters is an eargasm. And then that first 2 seconds of Hey Nineteen passes and it's like a shitty drum machine replaced everything. Because it did. Except all the drums are still played by amazing drummers. And they sound awkward in the stereo image.

Gaucho's was my favorite SD album at one point though. It's still a great album

Is this what Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood will look like in 20 years?

I remembered seeing this in a 1960's issue of Lampoon, a sort of Mad Magazine type deal. It cracked me up that their pitch was "we're not good looking, we just make good music".
>>
>>74048003
Shut up faggot I know about Wendel. If it's too clean for you I understand but the machine itself was a major innovation.
>>
>>74049287
True, it was a major innovation. It was pretty goddamn incredible for 1980. Doesn't make it fit on the album though. And it fucking shows in the songs that don't have it.
>>
As a recording engineer I get a massive audio boner for their production and recording quality. Its seriously next level.

But the music itself, though memorable, is literally the definition of dad-rock. I know that term gets thrown around a lot but they are literally the perfect example.
>>
>>74049815
Actually they are the definition of jazz rock. If you want to dismiss them because they're old yer a fucking idiot and you're seriously missing out.
>>
>>74036506
My favorite 70s band, and top five period.
>>
>>74049961
He's not dismissing them, they are dadrock. So is Beatles and Stones and all popular mainstream 60s/70s rock/pop. That doesn't make them bad. If being a dadrocker means i'd rather listen to Steely Dan then Ed Shareen then i'm ok with that.
>>
>>74049815
Dad Rock does not have chord progressions like Ebmaj7 Bbmaj13 Amaj13 Abmaj9 Ebadd9/G
Just because the music is "inoffensive" doesn't make it Dad Rock

>sperging out this hard
I like steely dan. They are still REO Speedwagon / ELO-tier coke-money dad rock.
>>
>>74050111
>So is Beatles and Stones
both of those bands have huge appeal outside middle aged 70s rockers. Steely Dan not so much.
>>
>>74048845
That's actually pretty based.
>>
>>74050316
No they're better. Also ELO is a lot better than REO Speedwagon.
>>
>>74050111
The term "dadrock" is inherently dismissive. People like you put all these incredible and diverse artists in the same category because they share a demographic. Just because millennials like both trap and shitty indie rock that doesn't mean they are the same thing.

Their name comes from a dildo.
>>
>>74050917
I find dadrock to be a funny term, I don't find it offensive and I mainly listen to 60s/70s music. I see the term pretty much meaning things that get played on classic rock radio stations a lot. Some is shit, some is good, just like modern music.
>>
>>74050917
calm the fuck down lol he literally said he likes steely dan. why are you going full autismo over 2 men who dont care about you?
>>
>>74050926
For anal
>>
>>74051197
Fuck off bitch I say what I like.
>>
>>74051131
Yeah I understand what you mean but it was the dismissive way he used it that bothered me. I was just looking out for the guy cuz why would you want anyone to miss out on Steely Dan?
>>
>>74053334
When I think dad rock I think REO, ELO, Boston, Styx, Kansas. Bands that followed the popular "rock" sound of the day. I always thought the term was intended to be derogatory. Steely Dan may have been popular at the same time but I never lumped them in with those. Funny though since my actual dad turned me on to Steely Dan
>>
>>74054379
Boston's debut is great though. It doesn't make sense to only count bad music as dad rock anyway, it's just music from another time. Use of the term in a derogatory way is proof of one's ignorance.
>>
>>74051197
They d-dont care?
>>
>>74050316
ELO and Steely Dan are not even close to as bad as REO Speedwagon.
