Learn your scales; learn proper fretting, picking and muting techniques; practice to a metronome or a drummer so you can lock in with a groove and keep in tempo.
Slappin!

Only use a pick.
Learn harmonies, how to spice up your playing without sounding like a dick, practice scales, and practice keeping with rhythm. You can do some rhythmical fuckery at times, and the bass really has to be locked into a groove with the drummer in particular for it to work. It's really about understanding your role in the band and knowing what to keep an ear out while playing.

dont listen to these fuckers.
Picks are useful in some spesific senarios and slapping is a pretty advanced tecnique, wait until you're a bit more used to the instrument before trying these

Knowing piano will help you in the sense that it's best to play notes with a bass, you can write some lines on the left end and then transpose them to bass pretty easily and they'll sound more or less the same.
I play bass as well, though primarily as a guitarist bass is quite different since I'm used to playing chords instead of usually single notes up and down the frets.
build up those calluses asap

imo this isnt a big deal for bass players.
