What does /mu/ think of prog rock?
Is it pretentious or genius?

It's neither. It's just music. Listen to it and enjoy it.

both

genius
>that album tho
>>74030630
was just listening to that album earlier
I fucking love prog and I really do think some of it is genius but I could see how people would see it as pretentious
It's the musical (not lyrical) equivalent of 'bruh 3deep5you', simply guitarmasturbatory faggots thinking they are LITERALLY god.
Prog is really chill and that's why I like it
Criticizing any art with some sort of intelligent substance or meaning as 'pretentious' is how culture gets dumbed down, and it's why we get all these 'ironic' artists today afraid of making any meaningful statements.
I'll tell you what's actually pretentious, genres like punk where they couldn't actually write songs play any instruments, but wanted to fit in with an image.
I got really into prog since I learned music theory. I think it's genius but I realize why people think it's pretentious. What I hate the most is when someone says that prog solos lack emotion that other simpler genres have. I think that is absolutely retarded.

Just wait until you discover classical music and jazz buddy. Pure wank and noodlery, I tell you!

I love Prog Rock and all its variants (mostly from 1967-1977) and I could understand why people hate it, but as a musician i really appreciate a lot of the arrangements and textures. The lyrics can be cheesy but if you take it in context I don't find them to be too bad.

Like whether you want to admit it or not, all of the classic prog era albums are super impressive. How can you not find something like Future Days by Can or Larks' Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson as impressive albums.

>The lyrics can be cheesy
You need Peter Hammill.
Prog rock is classical music for people who don't like classical music.

wrong, I like both a lot
